This paper deals with the influence of the scientific and technical knowledge on architectonic cu... more This paper deals with the influence of the scientific and technical knowledge on architectonic culture, in order to underline the role they played in the design process during centuries. The work goes over some characteristic phases of the history of constructions pointing the so-called ethic of construction: the balance relationships between the various components o building process. At the same time, the influence of the mathematical language in the proces architecture design is investigated. From the beginning, around the XVI and XVII century with first drawings made by the renaissance architects, passing through the period of the birth of Science of Structural Mechanics up to the present time, in which the non-linear geometry with the of modern software leads the choices of the designers. In a period in which the architecture seem release from the structural component of the Vitruvian triad (firmitas) it becomes important to m recall to the 'tectonic' tradition by taking into account all the aspects of the building practice: those governed by the creative intuition, lying outside the structural calculus, and those related to mathematic-mechanical models.

This work aims at focusing the inner relationship between the formal intuition of the design proc... more This work aims at focusing the inner relationship between the formal intuition of the design process and the structural/technological boundaries behind the creation of any architectural constructed form. Through the analysis of some noteworthy architectural examples, we highlight the reasons for which their designers achieved a virtuous equilibrium between shape, design and constructive awareness. In a contemporary era in which the major architectural production seems more interested to show off and amaze the spectators with huge scales and charming contaminations from the entertainment industry, a call for the need of the Vitruvian lesson appears essentials: the more we push our creativity as designers, the more we need to keep it firmly stick to the principles of firmitas, utilitas and venustas.
