Activity, for me, means involving the patient directly and forcefully in his or her own treatment, while also opening up new vistas for the analyst to be humanistically active with and for the individual. The therapy process then becomes vibrant and emotionally alive, affecting both therapist and patient. Technical skill, while not minimized, is placed within the context of patient needs and goals; autonomous action becomes the cornerstone of treatment. Technology is secondary to "emotional communion", e.g., the open, genuine relatedness of individuals. The key is to wed technique to human contact. Technique should aid humanistic interaction. Psychotherapy is "the healing quality" in the interpersonal experience. Techniques are ways to enhance the healing. Recently the writings of Rachman (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982) on Humanistic Analysis have offered a theoretical model and historic tradition for the use of actionoriented techniques in psychotherapy. In this paper, I will present some of this historical material, my understanding of humanistic analysis, and present a patient's summary of a therapy session utilizing the model described.

Certainly this has been the case with Betty Gabriel who is known only by the most dedicated group therapy historians or those fortunate enough to have seen or heard directly of her work. We wish to present Mrs. Gabriel to a wider group psychotherapy audience and also to give proper recognition and credit for her contn'butions to our field. In so doing we will also want to describe the psyehosocial atmosphere and personal tensions that have greatly shaped the special field of adolescent group psychotherapy. It was a bright, brisk morning in June of 1978 when we had the opportunity to interview Mrs. Gabriel in her upper west side apartment. The meeting had been postponed as Gabriel had had a rather serious operation the year previously that, despite her enthusiasm for the interview, limited her availability. This interview was scheduled as part of the combined work of the adolescent subcommittee on the history of adolescent group psychotherapy and the doctoral research of one of the authors (RR). Gabriel was excited by the prospect of the interview and stated she had some interesting information as well as personal views on the early development of adolescent group therapy. On the day of our meeting we found Betty Gabriel at age 93 to be an alert, vital, and strong-willed clinician who still continued to see patients. And in order to do this, these thoughts must be given a pliant form, (…) so that they are capable, finally, of maintaining a natural flexibility.” The analyst’s desire is a desire for stories that enables him as analyst to revisit his own and perhaps read them differently. Adam Phillips reminds us, “we don’t need more abstruse abstractions, new paradigms or radical revisions- we just need more good sentences.” So, we need to use our words and stories to mark out new psychic territory, imaginings, if you will, beyond stale renditions emptied by predictability. In this article I reflect, restore and renew my analytic practice from the illuminating perspectives of Jules (Renard) and David (Foster Wallace). Their writings made the ordinary come out of hiding, reminding us respectively that we must always keep, even in the midst of our greatest joys, a corner of sadness at the bottom of our soul to serve as refuge in case of sudden alarm, and that color is life in many shades, not all pleasant, but at the very least more vivid; both agreeing that wakefulness is far preferable to the daze of inattentive blindness. His writings on both the dynamics of trauma and treatment remain relevant to current study. In this paper, two Ferenczian concepts, identification with the aggressor and introjection, are discussed as they apply to trauma and retraumatization in professional mental health training. A detailed clinical case study is then presented.
