In this article, it is proposed that an instrument is developed to measure the said values which will benefit the teaching and learning mathematics. Discussion will focus on the reliability and validity of the sub-constructs and the instrument. The instrument consisted of 36 items with three sub-constructs, namely the general education values, mathematics education values, and mathematics values. Each of the sub-construct is represented by several dimensions. Data was collected from 325 lecturers of 17 matriculation colleges in the country. Descriptive statistics, reliability statistics for the construct, sub-constructs, and dimensionsand item analysis comprising ofinter-item correlation, item-total correlation, and Cronbach’s alpha value when item was deleted were demonstrated. The proposed framework theoretical structure was checked for uni-dimensionality using Principal Analysis Re...

However, few studies were focused on values, its development, measurement, and impact in education as compared to other affective aspects such as beliefs, motivation, perceptions, and attitude. In addition, most studies dealt with values developed in Western education setting where the spiritual domain was not considered. This paper detailed the instrument development processes including analysis, design, development, and evaluation phases. Content validity of the 36-item instrument was enhanced by a focus group and panels of experts’ reviews. Construct validity was investigated using reliability measures, item analysis, principal analysis of residuals, rating scale functioning, confirmatory factor analysis, and first order factor analysis. The inventory, three sub-constructs, nine ...

This study was conducted to assist educators in realising visual reasoning skills in students which can be employed in classroom practices as the students move to their higher levels of education. The study is part of a larger project. It studied 194 pre-university students’ perception of the use of graphs and examined their actual ability to extract information embedded in the graphs in order to understand and solve derivative problems. Findings showed that students were very encouraged to use graphs in the teaching and learning of mathematics but the opposite was evident in their worked solutions. Implications of teaching and learning are also discussed.

Unfortunately values seem to receive the least attention although it is one of the most stable affective domains. This is due to the fact that most people viewed mathematics as value-free, where in fact it has various values related to it. This paper fills in the missing literature on values in mathematics, particularly in the area of values assessment in mathematics education. The literature review indicated the absence of psychometrically based instruments which adopted holistic well defined constructs in mathematics education between the years 1985 and 2012. The five related instruments were reviewed on definitions of constructs and sub-constructs, designs of instruments, theoretical bases, samples, validity and reliability processes. Definitions on constructs and sub-constructs were found to be mainly based on the western education philosophy and the definition by Bishop (1988) is the most referred to and used by researchers from Australia, Turkey, and Taiwan. Four out of five instruments used survey method to measure values in mathematics education. Targeted respondents were found to be mainly the pre-service and in-service primary and secondary mathematics teachers. Only two out of five instruments went through rigorous processes to enhance validity and reliability. This study is an initial step in developing instrument measuring values in mathematics education for the Malaysian education system which is based on faith and religion as stipulated by the National Educational Philosophy which is not aligned with the western culture. The paper proposed the model of instrument which is in line with the Malaysian Educational Development Plan.

This study identifies the parental attitude in involving themselves towards the enhancement of the children's education among parents of students from secondary schools in Selangor. The factors of interest are: parents' income and qualification, finance preparation in children's tertiary education, involvement in activities at children's schools and children's exposure on future carrier. The findings positively demonstrated that parents are providing high considerable attention in terms of decisions, expectations and financial towards their children's academic future.

The results showed greater equilibrium between active/reflective and sensing/intuitive domains. However the respondents are more biased towards visual than verbal and sequential than global domain. According to gender, somewhat contrasting preference between male and female respondents were observed. Non-science students are able to achieve better equilibrium between learning styles than Science students. The results of the study could serve as the initial guide in developing more conducive and effective teaching-learning atmosphere in class.

The time to travel from onestationtothenext,i+i+Ifori=1,2,...,N-1,orN-+ 1, is a random variable R, that is identically and independently distributed for each i. If a station is found to be in need of repair when the operative visits it an additional time Bi is needed to carry out this work. 7he B,'s are independent and identically distributed random variables for each i. In addition only a certain proportion of repairs are successfully executed: o is the probability that a repair attempt is successful. It is assumed that each station fails randomly at average rate i in running time. This paper shows how the important characteristics of the system can be computed from the solution of a set of equations involving CJ and the Laplace transforms of Ri and Bi.
