These studies were carried out to improve the wear properties of the aluminum alloys piston by using age hardening method. AlSiCuMg alloys with 8%Si were used for this purpose. The solution treatment was performed at 500 ⁰ C for 5 h and then quenched. The samples have been aged at 130 ⁰ C, 170 ⁰ C and 210 ⁰ C among 1h-6h to observe the effect of the aging condition of hardness properties. Vickers microhardness tests were performed to determine the hardness of the samples. Microstructure analysis of the samples was carried out using optical microscope equipped with a digital camera and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results showed that the aging time of 2h at 170 ⁰ C improves the wear properties of the aluminum alloy pistons. This article will report the effect of weight percentage on the microstructure and properties of ... more This article will report the effect of weight percentage on the microstructure and properties of alumina particle reinforced aluminum metal matrix composite. This involved fabrication of aluminum composite via powder metallurgy route. Composite samples were prepared based on 5 to 20 wt% of 65 μm Al2O3 reinforcement. The matrix and reinforcement materials were mixed in rotating mixer. The sample were cold pressed at 250 MPa and sintered at 600 0C for 5 hours. This paper will report the microstructure, bulk density and hardness value of the composites. Microstructural analysis was carried out using SEM. SEM micrographs indicate that Al2O3 particulates homogeneously distributed in aluminum matrix. Al-5%Al2O3 gives the lower bulk density and Al-20%Al2O3 gives the highest hardness value (41.93 HV).The density and the hardness value of composite samples increase with the increasing of weight percentage.

Two solution treatment temperatures which were set at 510°C and 525°C were subjected onto the different groups of A319 alloy samples and followed by artificial ageing process at 180°C. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to observe the over-aged samples from both solution treatment temperatures. The observation shows that Mg 2 Si precipitates was only appeared at the higher solution treatment condition, while the Al 2 Cu precipitate developed in both solution treatment temperatures.

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Solution Heat Treatment Temperature on Mechanical Property and Silicon Morphology of Cast A319 Alloy

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015

The effect of different solution heat treatment temperature on the mechanical property and silico... more The effect of different solution heat treatment temperature on the mechanical property and silicon morphology was investigated by hardness test and microstructural analysis. The samples of A319 alloy were solution heat treated at three different temperatures (495°C, 510°C and 525°C) followed by artificial ageing at 180°C. The ageing kinetic was accelerated and peak aged gave the lowest value for the samples solution treated at the highest solution treatment temperature (525°C). This result was due to the fragmentation and spherodization of the silicon particles morphologies in the microstructure of the samples.

Research paper thumbnail of Study on Milling Periods on the Iron Mill Scale Particle Size and Properties

Advanced Materials Research, 2012

The relations between the milling periods with the iron mill scale particle size have been studie... more The relations between the milling periods with the iron mill scale particle size have been studied. Iron mill scale has been chosen for this research due to the nature of itself, as a by-product. From this research, the average optimum size for the final iron mill scale particle size intended to produce is at 300 μm. Raw iron mill scale received from the industries was in the form of chip with the average size of 10 mm across and 1.5 mm thickness. Three different samples from three different steel mill companies have been used for this study. Rolling ball mill has been used to mill the iron mill scale with two different milling periods, which were two hours and six hours. After the milling process, the iron mill scale was sieved using sieving machine to a few specified grating sizes. Weight of each sample collected from each grating size was calculated in order to get the percentage of the particle size distribution of the iron mill scale after the milling process. Sample collected ...

In this study, the raw materials used were waste glass and graphite powder. Silicon carbide was produced by milling and mixing waste glass and graphite powder in different grinding mills; planetary mill and ring mill. The samples were then heat treated at 700 °C for 1 hour soaking time. Two types of characterization procedures were completed to determine the properties and microstructure of silicon carbide. Formation of silicon carbide was only formed through grinding by planetary mill but not ring mill. This may due to the grinding mechanism of both mills. Due to the simple and low cost of raw material to form silicon carbide, silicon carbide has high potential to be one of the commercialized products. It has the potential in reducing waste and improves the environment quality.

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Pyrolysis Temperature on the Synthesis of Carbon Fiber from Natural Organic Waste

Through the analysis of data obtained from Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), pyrolysis process was carried out at three different temperatures that is 320 ° C, 330 ° C and 350 ° C. Effect of different pyrolysis temperature on the properties of carbon fibers produced have been studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis method. Results of SEM observed the carbon of the smallest particle size give the best structure and texture of surface morphology for optimum pyrolysis temperature of 330°C.

To achieve this objective, the iron mill scale needs to be refined. This involve the work of grinding the iron mill scale to an effective particle size, which is 300μm. Latter, the grounded iron mill scale will undergo the magnetic separation process. The purpose of this process is to remove any non-magnetic material. Than the following process is to fully oxidize and reduce the iron mill scale to form pure iron powder. From this step an optimum value for maximum heating temperature, heating rate and heating cycle was determined. Than in order to determine whether the oxidation and the reduction process have completely achieved their objective, the iron oxide and the iron powder that have been produced from both process, was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD) and X-Ray Florescent Analysis (XRF) technique. From the oxidation process, it is obv...

Although there are a lot number of methods available, sol-gel method has been widely used and some excellent work has been reported. Two different manganite systems, which are LSMO and PSMO, that have been prepared through sol-gel method was choose for the discussion purpose. It was found that both systems were successfully prepared via the sol-gel method. Both systems showing better magnetoresistance properties compare to sample prepared through solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction technique was used to study the structural characteristic. Atomic force microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope were used in order to investigate surface morphology. Resistivity as a function of temperature was measured by a standard four-probe method.
