The diagnosis of complicated ovarian cyst in pregnancy is challenging, management often poses a dilemma to the obstetrician and is a source of anxiety to the patient because it can be associated with adverse pregnancy outcome. Complicated ovarian cysts in pregnancy accounted for 16.7% of all surgically managed ovarian cyst accidents (3/18) in our institution. It was also the most common indication for non-pregnancy-related laparotomy in pregnancy (3/6). The mean age of the patients was 31 ± 5.6 years, 66.7% (2/3) were primigravidae and all had cyst complication in the second trimester. All women presented with abdominal pain but accurate initial preoperative diagnosis was made in only 33.3%. Mean presentation to surgery interval was 46.7 h. All patients received tocolytic argents. The mean size of the cyst was 10.9 cm, commonest complication was torsion, and all cysts ...

Consequent to being the commonest bacterial sexually transmitted infection, screening is recommended at the initial visit of antenatal care, but few countries have routine pregnancy screening and treatment programs. Prevalence assessment is a core component of the World Health Organisation sexually transmitted infection -surveillance programming which enables a country to monitor trends of this infection, for appropriate implementation of preventive measures. Aim: To determine the prevalence of Ct infection among pregnant women, and to describe sociodemographic characteristics and reproductive profile of seropositive pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria. Methods: Socio-demographic characteristics and risk factors were sought from 90 pregnant women using a profor...

Most of these medications are self-inserted. We report an unusual case of a 20-year-old patient with sickle cell disease with primary infertility who was referred from a general hospital with both clinical and radiologic evidence of advanced cancer of the cervix, for expert management. Speculum examination revealed copious dark frothy malodorous vaginal discharge with a huge necrotic irregular cervical mass extending to the upper two third of the vagina. Digital pelvic examination performed to clinically stage the tumor revealed the mass was made up of organized palm fronds and animal jaw, which were probably inserted for the patient 2 months ago as a therapy for primary infertility. The herbs were evacuated to reveal ulcer craters on the cervix, which bled on contact. Patient responded to antibiotic therapy and is being followed up in our clinic for the primary infertility.

However, in the media world, it is a source of sumptuous and captivating headline on the newspaper and to the legal profession, an attractive case to prosecute. A middle age teacher presented with secondary infertility. She had emergency laparotomy fifteen years ago for ruptured tubal ectopic pregnancy in a private hospital and postoperative period was uneventful. Amongst other investigations to find out the cause of infertility, she had hysterosalpingography and a radio-opaque clamp was visualized on the films. She was counselled and had laparotomy. A pair of surgical Kocher clamps was retrieved buried in the mesentery.

The true incidence of Mullerian duct anomalies is difficult to state because some cases may be asymptomatic and there are pitfalls associated with various diagnostic methods. This is a case report of a 17-year-old primigravida with septate uterus diagnosed at caesarean section performed at term for cephalo-pelvic disproportion. Baby was delivered with bilateral talipes equinovarus.

Acquisition of Ct infection is affected by biological and behavioural factors. Aim: Determine the prevalence of Ct infection and identify risk factors associated with Ct infection in sexually active fertile women in Northern Nigeria. Materials and methods: One hundred and fifty sexually active women presenting to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria were studied. Socio-demographic characteristics and history of risk factors for acquisition of genital Ct were obtained from the participants using a questionnaire. Their sera were tested for the presence of Ct immunoglobulin G using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay. Results: The mean ages ± standard deviation of seropositive and seronegative women were 29.1 ± 7.3 years and 28.9 (SD 6.7) years respectively (P = 0.438). The prevalence of Ct infection was 6.7% (10/150). Occupation was associated with Ct seropositivity (P = 0.02). Number of sexual partners, age at coitarche; duration of sexual exposure and previous history suggestive of sexually transmitted infection were not associated with Ct seropositivity (P > 0.05). Conclusion: A low prevalence of Ct was found among fertile women. Lack of regular source of personal income was associated with Ct infection but the sexual behavioural factors studied were not.
