This essay explores how Australia’s national identity has been affected by an Anzac story built by myths, myth-makers, mateship and men.

I examine the cultural value of hygiene by analysing the associated social, religious, commercial, and linguistic practices. This paper is an investigation of the ideologies about cleanliness, discursive power and their combined relationships with implied concepts of racial and moral purity.
As old as healing itself, the placebo effect is an important yet seemingly misunderstood phenomen... more As old as healing itself, the placebo effect is an important yet seemingly misunderstood phenomenon in conventional medical science. In a broad sense it occurs when patients experience positive results more from psychological rather than chemical origins. Much of antidepressants hidden efficacy has been found to be attributed to this effect, conversely, alternative medicine has embraced the notion and calls it self-healing. There is a major correlation between the placebo effect and the doctor-patient relationship. The placebo is more than just a control tool, it has the ability to be a positive force in the conventional medical understanding of the power of mind over body.
The philosophical investigation of consciousness has a long-standing history in the Western world... more The philosophical investigation of consciousness has a long-standing history in the Western world but it presents a scientific problem that no explanation or theory is yet to answer. The only absolute is the existence of consciousness itself. William James’ 'anaesthetic revelations’ advanced the understanding of altered states of consciousness (ASC) that may have influenced Timothy Leary and the use of the psychedelic drug LSD 100 years later, but Western science still has little knowledge of the function in the phenomenon of meditation, sleep, hypnosis and daydreaming, and generally ignores concepts of enlightenment, preferring scientific rationalism. The objectivity of science and subjectivity of consciousness are still very much at odds, yet through convergent disciplines of neurophenomenology and divergent proposals of state-specific sciences, new investigative approaches are able to start to define and distinguish between various levels of anatomical, functional and phenomenological aspects of many ASC.
