Cognitive disturbances may affect clinical scales used to assess the severity of depression. Aims: To find an association between cognitive disturbance as objectively recorded using event-related potentials (P300) with the Hamilton rating scale for depression (HAM-D) and Montgomery-Asberg depression rating scale (MADRS) in newly diagnosed cases of major depression. Methods and material: A cross-sectional study with a sample size of 46 diagnosed cases of major depression. The assessment was done using the HAM-D and MADRS. The P300 assessment was done with the auditory oddball paradigm using the Nihon Kohden NCV-SMG-EP system (Tokyo, Japan). Statistical analysis: Pearson correlation analysis was used to study the association between various parameters of P300 and the HAM-D and MADRS depression rating scales. Results: A significant correlation was found between A21-P300 amplitude Cz and the MADRS score. No significant correlation was seen between other P300 parameters and HAM-D and MADRS scales. Conclusions: As the results were objectively recorded using various parameters of event-related potentials (P300), cognitive impairment was not significantly associated with depression rating scales i.e., the HAM-D and MADRS scores.

Nursing is a demanding profession by its inherent nature, and it promotes mild mental morbidity and physical disease. Chronic work stress may lead to deranged autonomic function in nurses, resulting in increased chances of cardiac illness. Aim and Objective: The objective of this research was to see whether work stress is linked to autonomic dysfunction. Materials and Methods: The present study comprised 30 nurses working at a tertiary care center for more than 10 years. Autonomic cardiovascular regulation was measured using sympathetic stimulation generated by prolonged handgrip and the heart rate response to the Valsalva technique (Ewing et al., 1973) and compared to non-working healthy females. The work stress was measured using a modified occupational stress inventory. Results: No sympathetic abnormalities were found in the nurses. Borderline abnormal parasympathetic reactivity (VR = 1.11–1.20) was found in 67% of nurses. About 76.6% of nurses were found with moderate occupational stress score (OSS) and 23.3% were having high OSS. Conclusion: It is concluded that chronic stress reduces vagal tone. Subjects with low vagal tone showed increased cardiosympathetic drive during stressful work situations.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study of all maternal deaths from January to December 2021. The causes of death and the time between admission and death for each maternal death were thoroughly examined. Results: The Maternal mortality ratio in the present study was found to be 357.7/100,000 live births for the year 2021. Antepartum eclampsia was found most prevalent cause of maternal mortality i...

Nutritional problems like protein energy malnutrition (PEM), anemia and vitamin A deficiency continue to plague a large proportion of Indian children. The diets and nutritional status of urban slum children in India is far away from being satisfactory. The major objective of this research is “to assess the health status of children of slum area.

Some inflammatory lesions like Trichomonas and Human papiloma virus are forerunners of malignancy underlining the importance of diagnosing these conditions early. Methods: The material for the present study comprised of examination of 500 cervical/vaginal smears taken from patients attending OPD. Papanicolaou staining was used for staining. Cases were reported according to The Bathesda System. Result: In the present study low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion were found in 35 cases (7%). High grade squamous intraepithelial lesion was found in 25 cases (5%). Invasive carcinoma cervix was found in 7 cases (1.4%). Atypical epithelial cells of uncertain significance were found in 65 cases, of which 50 cases were reported as ASCUS and 15 cases were reported as AGCUS. In the present study significant number of patients with history of early age at marriage (34 cases) and first child before 18 years of age (37 cases) presented with squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL + HSIL). Carcinoma cervix was found to be correlated with early age of marriage and first child birth before 18 years of age. Conclusion: Cervical cancer can be detected at a very early stage by simple technique of exfoliative cytology. Early stage detection is important because early stage is 100% curable, reducing the morbidity and mortality from invasive cancer cervix.
