This paper explores the ethical issues encountered in Translation Studies research, with special ... more This paper explores the ethical issues encountered in Translation Studies research, with special reference to literary translation from Finnish into English. The underlying general principles can be found in various publications on research ethics, academic and institutional ethical guidelines and translator ethics. I seek to show that research in Translation Studies may have a strong practical impact on the translators whose work is used as research data, yet research methodologies currently in use in Translation Studies do not take the implications of this impact into account. I also claim that, to date, the specific issues arising in TS research have not been adequately discussed in guidelines on general research ethics and/or on translator ethics.

This article is a practically oriented case study on a multidisciplinary Translation Studies proj... more This article is a practically oriented case study on a multidisciplinary Translation Studies project, my PhD thesis (Hekkanen 2010), involving a combination of translation archaeology, translation sociology and text analysis. It aims to demonstrate some practical problems and advantages related to combining several methods in a one-author project. The main advantages in this case were the possibility to obtain a wider perspective of a field where previous research was scarce and the ability to use various materials and methods to support each others’ findings. Problems, on the other hand, involved problems fitting different types of data together, questions on the extent to which the various methods in fact address the “same” phenomenon, and issues in reporting the results in an approachable manner. The main aim of the article is to make it easier for researchers in the early stages of their career who are planning to embark on a multidisciplinary project to prepare for the task ahead.
This article discusses and compares two sociological theoretical frameworks, Pierre Bourdieu'... more This article discusses and compares two sociological theoretical frameworks, Pierre Bourdieu's field theory and the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) proposed by e.g. Bruno Latour. The former framework has been widely used in Translation Studies, while the latter has been introduced much more recently but is now gaining ground. The two approaches are compared with reference to a specific translation situation, the translation of Finnish prose literature into English in the UK. The comparison shows that the ANT model is better suited for analysing the structural context in which translation activity takes place, while the Bourdieusian model provides better opportunities for analysing individual translators' practices through the concept of habitus. The most in-depth results can thus be obtained by combining the two approaches.
This doctoral thesis focuses on the translation of Finnish prose literature into English in the U... more This doctoral thesis focuses on the translation of Finnish prose literature into English in the United Kingdom between 1945 and 2003. The subject is approached using translation archaeology, interviews, archival material, detailed text analysis and reception material. The main theoretical framework is Descriptive Translation Studies, in addition to which certain sociological theories (Bourdieu's field theory, actor-network theory) are also used. After charting the published translations, two periods of time are selected for closer analysis on the basis of highest translation numbers: an earlier period from 1955 to 1959, involving eight translations, and a later one from 1990 to 2003, with a total of six translations. While these translation numbers may appear low, they are actually rather high in proportion to the total number of 28 one-author literary prose translations published in the UK over the approximately 60 years being studied.
