The function of criticism and the role of the critics change from time to time. This study also explores Aristotle"s conception of tragedy as the perfect form of art. Aristotle"s Poetics (1961) offers an account of what he calls poetry, which is a synthesis of a poet, author, comedy, tragedy, lyric poetry, epic poetry and that they are all imitations but in different ways. Its photographic realism failed to convey the tension and complexity of contemporary life. Stephen Phillips' Herod (1901) led to the revival of poetic drama followed by great Irish writers like Yeats, Synge and O'Casey. It also focuses on Eliot's views on poetic drama and he reiterates that the greatest drama is poetic drama and poetic excellence can compensate for dramatic defects. This study also deals with a brief historical background of the play with special mention about its theme, the role of the chorus and as a poetic drama.
