Scholars particularly feminists have emphasized upon the ways and means for upholding the dignity and position of the women in society. Self Help Group (SHG) is such a platform, which have since its inception in 1976, proved a big success in hastening economic growth and development of the whole nation by bringing together the members of the society in a collective fashion. As most of the SHG's in India are rural-centric and women-oriented, this in turn has helped in speeding up the progress of the women folk, who were left behind since history. However the performance of SHG does differ with respect to a particular community as well as with geographical area. Thus the main intention of the paper is to examine the role of SHG's in women empowerment at the selected villages under Rangjuli Revenue Circle of Goalpara district of Assam. The study is rural-centric and specifically focuses upon women group, as they are deemed to be the most vulnerable section of the society. Basically based upon primary survey, the study suggests that about 83 per cent of the surveyed women folk (out of total 188 women members) have benefitted much and feel empowered after being associated with SHG. Infact SHG's have casted its influence upon their personal as well as social life, rendering them respectful position in the family as well as community at large.

With more than 387.38 million Indian people living below poverty line (World Bank, 2011), it becomes imperative to provide them a stimulus to overcome the quagmire of poverty and ignorance prevalent among them. The study area comprises of the selected villages of Rangjuli revenue circle of Goalpara district of Assam, where the Self Help Groups have been surveyed, regarding the microcredit and its role-both positive and negative, in their economic and social lives including their satisfaction level regarding microfinance. The study also bears significance as most of the SHGs surveyed (45 out of 57) are women groups, who are seen as most reliable in terms of repayment and utilization of loans (Joy Deshmukh-Ranadive, 2005). The result suggests that the f...

But, contrary to the developed countries of the world, the phenomenon of urbanisation and urban development relationship can be hardly noticed in developing economies like India. Assam being no exception has been experiencing a phenomenal urban growth with absolute increase in number of urban centres (12 to 214) and urban population (77 thousand to 4.4 million) during 1901-2011. But, it is discouraging that the rate of urban development as compared to the urban growth in the state is quite low. Therefore, it is still unclear, whether urbanisation in Assam is the product of urban development or it is mere reflection of high population increase and consequent unbalanced urban development in urban centres. Based primarily on Secondary data, the study examines the level of urbanisation in Assam with respect to urban development including the demographic and social implications of rapidly growing urban population.

Brahmaputra-the lifeline of about 264 lakh population of Assam, has been intrinsically related with the way of life of the inhabitants within its domain and has both positively and negatively affected them. Bank line migration and consequent channel shift is a common phenomena of the mighty river due to its high braided condition and host of other geological as well as other hydrological factors. The study incorporates the Agyathuri-Sualkuchi stretch of Kamrup district, within 5 kms downstream of the Saraighat bridge (the first bridge over Brahmaputra), where the river shows strong northward migrating tendency. Major changes and displacements have been taking place in the region due to channel shift. Keeping in view all these aspects, the paper tries to examine the extent of area encroached by the river since 1911 to 2005 and thereby analyse the causes responsible for channel shift. The specified objectives have been fulfilled based on the utilization of toposheets and google maps in GIS environment including personal field visit. Necessary maps and diagrams have been prepared for exposition of the problem.
