These are the Missale Romanum (Venice, 1494), De Re Militari (Rome, 1494), and Aquinas, Summa contra Gentiles (Cologne, 1501). Two of the books have Hungarian connections, as is shown by inscriptions in them. They appear to have been at the grammar school since the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, but their detailed provenance remains obscure.

Compendium Grammaticae Russicae oder Kurtze Einleitung zu der Russischen Sprache Denen Auslaendern zum Besten ausgegeben". 87 CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk

When the source is a manuscript, this is still a very labour-intensive process, unlikely to be repeated. Scrupulous accuracy in the transference of information is therefore needed, continuing the tradition of diplomatic editions. The editing of texts within kleine Philologien differs from the classical mainstream, because of the different histories both of the traditions and of the texts themselves. For Slavonic, this reflects in particular the predominance of linguistics in early textual studies, and the national variants of the Slavonic language. Digital methods offer a new approach to these problems, principally through the more complete capture of information and greater flexibility in its presentation. Users of digital technology should ensure that their editions are enhanced rather than limited by it.

There are several of these in Slavonic languages, notably свила in South Slavonic and шьлкъ in East Slavonic. The use of the latter on two occasions in the Slavonic Book of Esther is part of the evidence for the East Slavonic origin of the Ausgangstext of this book. However, the word that it renders, either בּוּץ or βύσσος, does not mean ‘silk’, but ‘linen’ (although confusion between βύσσος and silk appears to be endemic throughout mediaeval Europe). On the one occasion on which silk really is mentioned in the Bible (Revelation 18:12), none of the established Slavonic words for silk is used, but, in most manuscripts, the hapax legomenon шикъ or сикъ, evidently a corruption of сирикъ for σηρικόν, left untranslated. The occasional substitution of чрьвлень further complicates the picture of how the word was, or was not, understood.

The method is to encode the entire text as an XML document with a very simple structure, dividing the text into a linear, non-hierarchical series of segments, each segment consisting of a section of text plus the variants to that section with an indication of the witness(es) in which they are found. XSLT is used to number the portions of text and the corresponding variants and then to extrapolate the variants into an apparatus. The result is an XML document with a relatively simple structure. Additional mark-up may be added at this stage if required, for example further automatic transformation into a TEI-conformant document.
