Filipinos make up a sizable percentage of global expatriates. In 2018, there were 2.3 million Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW), with Saudi Arabia accounting for 24.3% of them. Despite the challenges of cross-cultural adjustment, these expatriates seek economic opportunities in the Kingdom due to better job opportunities and higher earning potential. The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of cultural and emotional intelligence in the cross-cultural adaptation of Filipino expats in Saudi Arabia. A survey of 483 male OFWs was conducted to test the proposed hypotheses, and both descriptive and correlational research methods were used.
The correlation results revealed that there are significant positive associations between cultural intelligence (CQ) and cross-cultural adjustment (CCA) of Filipino expatriates in Saudi Arabia, with behavioral and motivational CQ as strong predictors. Furthermore, there were significant relationship between emotional intelligence (EQ) and cross-cultural adjustment (CCA) of Filipino expatriates, with Appraisal and Recognition of Emotion in Others being the strongest predictor.
The status of Filipino expatriates, whether new or experienced, moderated the relationship between EQ factors and CCA degree significantly. According to the study's findings, high CQ and EQ levels, as well as prior experience in the host country, may be important factors in international careers.
This paper adds to the growing body of knowledge on Filipino expatriate management and cross-cultural adjustment.
