The analysis of variance revealed significant mean sum of square for all the characters under study. The result of study revealed that the magnitudes of phenotypic coefficient of variation were greater than genotypic coefficient of variations for all characters. The High estimates of heritability in conjugation with higher values of genetic advance and genotypic coefficient of variation for the characters viz. Plant height, Number of leaves per plant, leaf breadth, Green and Dry fodder yield indicated preponderance of additive genetic variance for these characters. Positive and significant association of number of leaves per plant, leaf breadth and dry fodder yield with green fodder yield indicate the importance of these characters during selection for crop improvement program in forage sorghum.

The counts of deadhearts in % at 21 and 28 days after emergence (DAE) varied significantly with the treatment schedule- least values of 13.15 and 15.22%, respectively were observed in seed treatment with imidacloprid 48FS @ 12 ml/ kg seed followed by quinalphos 25EC @ 2 ml/ l water spray 15 DAE. The next best treatments were viz., seed treatment with imidacloprid 30FS @ 12 ml/ kg seed with 13.68 and 16.29% deadhearts, respectively; it was followed by seed treatment with thiamethoxam 48FS @ 12 ml/ kg seed. Maximum grain yield (32.33 q/ ha) was observed with seed treatment with imidacloprid 48FS @ 12 ml/ kg followed by quinalphos 25EC @ 2 ml/ l water spray at 15 DAE. Combining ability studies revealed the presence of significant differences due to lines, testers and line x testers, indicating the presence of variability. Considering the general combining ability effects of parents, female AKMS 40A and male AKR 496 were good general combiners for grain yield and the female AKMS 14A and male AKR 496 and AKR 498 were good general combiners for earliness. The crosses AKMS 40A X AKR 497, AKMS 27A X AKR 456 and AKMS 14A X AKR 496 were identified for improving grain yield and crosses AKMS 40A X AKR 493, AKMS 40A X AKR 494, AKMS 27A X AKR 493 and AKMS 27A X AKR 497 were selected for breeding earliness.

This indicated that increase in grain yield in rabi sorghum under drought condition is because of increase in one or more of these growth parameters and these parameters need to be given due stress while developing the high yielding hybrids in rabi sorghum under drought condition

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) belongs to the tribe Andropogonae of the grass family Poace... more Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) belongs to the tribe Andropogonae of the grass family Poaceae. Sorghum is fifth most important cereal crop in the world after rice, wheat, maize and barley (FAO, 2007), cultivated globally for food, fodder, feed and fuel (Praveen et al., 2015). „Heterosis‟ or „hybrid vigour‟ is the increased or decreased vigour growth, fitness or yield of a hybrid over the parental values, resulting from the crossing of genetically unlike parents. The term “Heterosis” was proposed by Shull (1914) as the development stimulus resulting from the union of different gametes and hybrid vigour to manifest effects of heterosis. It has been stated by (Praveen et al., 2015) that compared to traditional landraces sorghum F1 hybrids are superior by 50-60% with respect to grain yield. Among the several identified cytoplasm A1 (milo) predominantly used for commercial production of hybrids (Reddy et al., 2007).

The significantly highest grain yield (31.25 q ha -1 )and fodder yield(79.12q/ha) of sorghum(Pooled mean) was obtained with application of 75%RDF (60:30:30 kg NPK ha -1 ) FYM @ 5 t ha -1 and use of Azospirllum and PSB and the 60 kg nitrogen through urea(T 4 ) was applied in three split doses viz ., 20 N at 10 DAS, 20 kg N at 30 DAS and 20 kg N at 45 DAS. This treatment also increased total uptake of N (92.11 kg/ha), P (22.85 kg/ha) and K (106.50 kg/ ha). This treatment also improved soil fertility status with the increased OC (6.33g/kg), available N(283/ha), available P 2 O 5 (25.00kg/ ha) and K 2 O (424 kg/ha), sustained soil ph (7.56) and EC (0.23 dSm -1 ) and...
