Research paper thumbnail of Gender Analysis of Children’s Activities in Pakistan

The Pakistan Development Review, 2008

This paper estimates gender differences in children’s time allocation among four ordered options.... more This paper estimates gender differences in children’s time allocation among four ordered options. It analyses the sample of boys and girls separately through a series of probit models using primary data. We compare the socio-economic determinants of boys’ and girls’ activities. The results suggest that boys are more likely to go to school as compared to girls with the increase in their age. The provision of schooling as an instrument to decrease child labour and home-care would affect boys more than girls. To make the adults literate (five years of education) only is not enough to eliminate the gender gap in schooling; a greater number of years of adult education is necessary. The female adult education may be devised to eliminate gender discrimination in child schooling. In the larger households, girls drop out of school and are absorbed in the labour market earlier than boys. The results further suggested that the use of resources is significantly different for boys’ and girls’ we...

IRB approval was obtained and all patients provided consent before participation. Those with a clinical and spirometric diagnosis of COPD, a history of 2 or more exacerbations in the past year, and no exacerbations in the past 4 weeks were recruited. Physical activity was measured using an actigraph device worn continuously (24 hrs/day) on the wrist. The number of minutes per 24-hour day at moderate, vigorous, and very vigorous activity levels were recorded as outcomes. Exacerbations were defined by changes in the 14-item, Exacerbations of Chronic Pulmonary Disease Tool (EXACT), which was filled out daily. Patients remained in the study for 6 months or until 4 weeks after the onset of an exacerbation. The study, which commenced in December, 2011, is designed to be event-driven until 20 exacerbations are recorded. To date, 12 patients have been enrolled: 7 males; mean age 61 years, mean FEV1 53%. Seven had EXACT-defined COPD exacerbations (mean change = 15 units) over 1200+ total patient-days of observation. Exacerbation durations ranged from 1 to 11 days. Mean daily physical activity on exacerbation days tended to be lower than on non-exacerbation days: moderate activity, 70 ± 25 (SE) vs. 99 ± 12 minutes (p = 0.19); vigorous activity, 55 ± 12 vs. 74 ± 10 minutes (p = 0.01); and very vigorous activity, 6 ± 4 vs.11 ± 3 minutes (p = 0.07). In summary, this longitudinal study suggests that physical activity decreases during COPD exacerbations.

Empirical findings indicated that the financial liberalization index negatively created an impact on the household savings in the short-run, as well as in the long-run, suggesting that financial liberalization slid down the savings instead of enhancing it. Policy-makers should not rely on financial reforms to augment household savings. However, per-capital income, agriculture sector GDP and remittances positively affected the household savings in the short-run, while the real deposit rate negatively affected the household savings in the long-run. It is important for the country to maintain high growth rate for the increasing per-capital income which would contribute in enhancing household savings. As such, the growth of the agriculture sector and remittances should also be a part of the policy. Nonetheless, the dependency ratio also negatively affected the household savings in the shortrun.

FCSA provides Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of overall system performance and resource allocation in open and unpredictable environment. FCSA uses quality control feedback loop to keep CPU utilization under desired unitization bound by avoiding overloading and deadline miss ratio. Integrated Fault tolerance (FT) based FCSA design methodology guarantees that the Safety Critical (SC) tasks will meet their deadlines in the presence of faults. However, current FCSA design model does not provide the optimal solution with dynamic load fluctuation. This paper presented a novel methodology of designing an online adaptive fault tolerant based feedback control algorithm for multiprocessor embedded systems. This procedure is important for control scheduling co-design for multiprocessor embedded systems.

Background: Physical inactivity is common in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) ... more Background: Physical inactivity is common in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and independently predicts poor outcomes. Longitudinal assessments of physical activity in outpatients with COPD, covering periods of stability and exacerbations, have not been evaluated previously. Methods: Patients with clinically stable COPD and a history of two or more clinical exacerbations in the preceding 12 months were recruited. Physical activity was measured using a triaxial accelerometer worn continuously on the nondominant wrist. Mean minutes per day of higher level physical activity was the primary outcome variable. Symptom-defined exacerbations were assessed using the 14-item Exacerbations of Chronic Pulmonary Disease Tool (EXACT) daily dairy. Clinically reported exacerbations were also captured. Minutes per day of higher level physical activity during exacerbation and nonexacerbation days were compared, using a mixed model analysis. Measurements and Main Results: Seventeen patients were monitored for 135 6 18 days. Nine were male with a mean age of 63 6 12 years and mean FEV 1 of 52 6 20%. Fifteen patients had 27 symptom (EXACT)-defined exacerbations, including 9 that were also clinically reported. Patients spent fewer minutes per day at a higher level physical activity level during exacerbation days than nonexacerbation days: 131 6 14 versus 157 6 14 minutes (P , 0.0001). The greatest reduction in physical activity was during the first week of the exacerbation; activity remained low for approximately 2 weeks after exacerbation resolution. Conclusions: Physical activity decreased significantly during exacerbations. Reduction in activity occurs early during an exacerbation and persists for about 2 weeks after symptomatic recovery.

In particular, we provide closed form expressions concerning the average duration of the open position, E(N h), the variance of the open duration, Var(N h), the average of the stopped log price, E(S N h), the variance of the stopped log price, Var(S N h), the correlation, Corr(N h , S N h), and the Laplace transform, E(e ÀsNh). These results are obtained, in discrete time settings, for binomial and other price scenarios. Furthermore, when analytic results are not possible, such as the case of a normal distribution for log returns, we show by simulation that our general conclusions still hold. Using these statistics we point out some of the subtle features of the trailing stops strategy.

Research paper thumbnail of Child malnutrition in developing economies: a case study of Bangladesh

The urban and rural areas are separately probed for stunting, wasting and underweight children. The analysis revealed that birth-interval, mother's education and wealth index reduce the malnutrition in children for urban and rural household, while duration of breastfeeding and lower BMI of the mother increase the malnutrition in both urban and rural areas. Wealth index is more effective in rural areas as compared to urban ones. The male children are more likely to be malnourished in urban areas but female children are more likely to be malnourished in rural areas. The primary level of education of the women has no significant impact on nutritional status of children in urban as well as in rural areas. It has important policy implications that at least secondary level of education should be part of the education policy of Bangladesh. The incidence of diarrhea enhances the probability of stunting and wasting in both urban and rural areas of Bangladesh. From the policy perspective mother's education and birth-interval are required for achieving the nutrition status of children. For the long-run the socioeconomic status of the household expressed by wealth index is needed. The duration of breastfeeding needs to be reduced by initiation of the supplement food. Research paper thumbnail of Financial Liberalization and Demand for Money: A Case of Pakistan

The Journal of Developing Areas, 2013

Literature in economics has identified many channels through which the financial liberalization m... more Literature in economics has identified many channels through which the financial liberalization may affect demand for money. There are evidences of stability as well as instability of demand for money due to financial development for developing economies. The objective of the current study is to examine the effect of financial liberalization on demand for money in Pakistan, i.e. whether financial liberalization has affected the demand for money or not. The issue is important as stable demand for money function is a prerequisite for formulating and operating monetary policy. To achieve the objective JJ cointegration and auto regressive distributed lag (ARDL) to the cointegration is employed to estimate the long-run equilibrium relationship between broad money M 2 and composite financial liberalization index along with other determinants of demand for money like gross domestic product, real deposit rate and exchange rate. In order to assess the stability of the model, the parameter constancy tests, i.e. recursive residuals, CUSUM and CUSUMSQ tests have been applied. The empirical results indicated that for broad money, there exists long-run money demand function. The financial liberalization, gross domestic product and real deposit rate positively affect the demand for money in the long as well as short-run.

The matter of food security in rural areas is of immense nature and needs to be probed. A number of factors are responsible for the situation. The current paper examines the determinants of three aspects of food security in rural areas of Pakistan, i.e. food availability, accessibility and absorption.Design/methodology/approachTo estimate the determinants of each component, a series of models is created, in which each component of food security is a function of socio‐economic variables. Ordinary least square regression is used to estimate the coefficients.FindingsIt has been observed from the results that the production of wheat, rice, maize, pulses, oilseeds, poultry meat and fish at the district level is found to affect food availability positively. The ultimate objective is to frame policy proposals for children's nutritional welfare.Design/methodology/approachIn this empirical study, logit model is applied to 882 observations of primary data. The composite index of anthropometric failure (CIAF) is constructed to use an indicator of malnutrition.FindingsThe probability for anthropometric failure increases by age, birth‐order, female sex and activity of the child (child labor or home‐care activity) other than schooling. The parents' education, specifically mothers' education, can play an important role for child's nutritional status. Malnutrition is positively related with congestion in the household (number of household members per room), while provision of electricity, safe drinking water and underground drainage turns out to be negatively affecting child...

All the district, except Sindh, is more probable to be food insecure in availa...
