3. Når er paternalisme et l...

To develop services and communities in more recovery-oriented directions, enhanced understandings of recovery in terms of personal and social contexts are important prerequisites. The aim of this study is to explore the nature and characteristics of the experiences of recovery. The method used is a form of qualitative meta-synthesis that integrates the findings from multiple qualitative studies published by one research group. Twenty-eight empirical papers with a focus on recovery as personal and contextual experiences were included in this meta-synthesis. Five meta-themes were developed: (a) being normal, (b) respecting and accepting oneself, (c) being in control, (d) recovery as intentional, and (e) recovery as material and social. The themes describe how recovery encompasses dynamics between personal experiences and contextual dimensions. This meta-synthesis consolidated an understanding of recovery as dynamics ...

This article is part of a larger qualitative interview study of young adults. The data for this report were the individual interviews with two study participants. These participants were chosen because they offered in-depth understandings relating to various aspects of community belonging. A thematic narrative analysis of the interview data was carried out. Central to this model of analysis is to transform unstructured qualitative interview data into a unified narrative for each participant, structured around a thematic plot. The analysis revealed two plots: ‘Having to go against yourself to be an insider', and ‘You have to realize that you have problems and try to do something about them'. We interpreted the first narrative as an expression of marginalized people feeling they deser...

The purpose of this paper is to describe parents’ experiences of collaboration with mental health practitioners. Design/methodology/approach This was a qualitative study based on thematic analysis of multi-stage focus group discussions with ten parents of young adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use problems. Findings The authors identified three major themes related to family member’s experiences of collaborative practices: negotiating partnerships, incomprehensible services and being the young adult’s advocate. Research limitations/implications A potential limitation of this study is that the parents who agreed to take part in this study were all part of the population who really want to be involved in their relative’s care; other family members who did n...

Nøkkelord Tilhørighet, identitet, strategier, unge voksne, rus, psykisk helse, samfunn, kvalitativ studie Adaptation or retraction? Belonging strategies among young adults with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health problems In the health and social services, meeting human needs, such as belonging, is crucial. The aim of this study is to explore how young adults with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health problems experience a sense of belonging in their local environment, and of facilitators and barriers related to this. Data were gathered through qualitative in-depth interviews with seven young adult service users. Using phenomenological-hermeneutic analysis, three major themes were identified: (1) Can't find anything to relate to in the mainstream, (2) balancing between mainstream and outsider life, and (3) trying to get a stronger foothold in the mainstream.

The aim of this study is to explore how hope is experienced from a first-person perspective of people with co-occurring mental health and substance use problems, and what may inspire the experience of hope. Data were collected through qualitative in-depth interviews with 9 service users. Inclusion criteria were experiences of co-occurring mental health and substance use problems, and having received services related to these challenges in a Norwegian municipality setting. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. An initial theme encapsulates experiences of hope itself, and the following themes revolve around what participants perceived as hope inspiring. Hope was experienced in terms of aspirations to various changes, often exemplified by what may seem an «ordinary life». Receiving help with practical issues like suitable housing or debt, along with support from trustworthy others, was of great importance in order to experience hope. Trust and confidence both in relation to oneself and others, was pivotal when rebuilding faith in something better for the future.

The aim of this study was to identify key characteristics of the ways in which mental health practitioners collaborate with service users and their families in practice. The data was generated through qualitative in-depth interviews with seven young adult service users, six of whom were interviewed twice. The qualitative data analysis resulted in three overarching themes: (1) the need to accept one's own life and the structures surrounding it, (2) being caught between conflicting social worlds, and (3) moral fumbling in choices and actions. Using an empirical study, we suggest that a process of 'communal invalidation' operates through which young adults in the community are socially defined as inadequate. This invalidation serves as a formidable barrier to their recovery.

To test this, 347 leaders completed an online survey. It was found that women leaders had similar senior leadership ambitions as men, and contrary to expectations, gender did not affect the relation between gender bias and senior leadership ambitions. However, for both women and men, perceptions of gender bias were related to cynicism towards work, and ultimately, lower senior leadership ambitions. Further, women leaders who worked in male-dominated workplaces reported more issues of subtle gender bias than others. These findings have meaningful implications and suggest that it is likely systemic barriers, and not women's ambitions, that explain the lack of women in the C-suite.
