This research aimed to analyze the association between dietary pattern and changes in cardiovascular risk factors among postmenopausal Taiwanese women using binary logistic regression. This cross-sectional study involved 5689 postmenopausal Taiwanese women aged 45 years and above, and the data were obtained from Mei Jau Health Management Institution database between 2001 and 2015. The cardiovascular risk dietary pattern characterized by high intakes of processed food, rice/flour products, organ meat, and sauce was derived by reduced rank regression. Every year, millions of Muslims fast during the Ramadan month. The objective of the study was to ... more Every year, millions of Muslims fast during the Ramadan month. The objective of the study was to compare anthropometric measures, dietary intake, and lifestyle factors of Indonesian Muslim young adults during regular days and during Ramadan fasting. The total sample sizes of this study were 49 subjects filled out anthropometric and lifestyles questionnaires before and after Ramadan, and 39 subjects provided 2-day dietary records during regular days and during Ramadan. Before Ramadan, the body weight and BMI were 55±10.8 kg and 22±3 kg/m2, respectively. After Ramadan, the body weight and BMI were 55±11 kg and 22±3 kg/m2, respectively. The differences between the subjects’ body weight as well as their BMI reported before and after Ramadan were significant (n=49; p=0.008; and p=0.012, respectively). In this study, we aimed to compare the correlation between dietary patterns and metabolic syndrome (MetS) using two methods for identifying dietary patterns.Methods: The participants (n = 25,569) aged ≥ 40 years with impaired kidney function were retrieved from Mei Jau (MJ) Health Screening database from 2008 to 2010. Dietary patterns were identified by principal component analysis (PCA) and reduced rank regression (RRR) from twenty-two food groups using PROC FACTOR and PROC PLS functions.Results: We identified two similar dietary pattern characteristics (high intakes of deep fried foods, preserved or processed foods, dipping sauce, meat, sugary drinks, organ meats, jam/honey, fried rice/flour products, instant noodles and eggs) derived by PCA and RRR. Purpose Stunting and being underweight in children are major nutritional problems especially in d... more Purpose Stunting and being underweight in children are major nutritional problems especially in developing countries. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of egg supplementation on a vitamin and mineral fortification program for growth, cognitive development and hemoglobin in underweight and stunted children. Design/methodology/approach This was an experimental study using a crossover design conducted in Yogyakarta province, Indonesia. A total of 39 subjects were randomly selected from two community health centers and provided with two types of intervention: vitamin and mineral fortification sprinkle (Taburia) and Taburia with egg supplementation (Taburia PLUS). Each intervention was conducted for three months with one-month of washout period in between interventions. Findings There were no changes in weight-for-age Z-score in Taburia and Taburia PLUS (all p > 0.05). The height-for-age Z-score was increased in Taburia PLUS (p = 0.022) but not in Taburia (p > 0.05). Hemoglobin level was significantly increased in Taburia (p = 0.039) but not in Taburia PLUS (p > 0.05). There were no significant changes in visual motoric score in Taburia, but there were slight increases in Taburia PLUS (all p > 0.05). Originality/value The authors concluded that egg supplementation combined with multivitamins and minerals fortification program, Taburia PLUS, is beneficial to improve linear growth but not hemoglobin in stunted and underweight children.

The research aimed to investigate the association of nutritional status, blood lead level, and ri... more The research aimed to investigate the association of nutritional status, blood lead level, and risk factors of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in female traffic police officers routinely exposed to lead in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Fifty-four female traffic police officers aged 20-50 year old participated in this cross-sectional study. As risk factors of diabetes and hypertension, Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated from height and weight data while percentage of body fat (%BF) was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Energy intake (EI) was assessed using 1x24-hour dietary recall. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) method was conducted to measure blood lead (Pb-S). Blood pressure (BP) was measured using mercury sphygmomanometer while blood glucose (Glu) was measured in laboratory. Pearson's and Spearman Rank correlation test were performed for statistical analysis. We demonstrated that Pb-S was positively correlated with both systolic and diastolic BP but not with BMI, %BF, and Glu. Meanwhile, there was a correlation between Glu and either BMI or %BF but not EI. Therefore, our study indicates that exposure to lead is correlated with hypertension while nutritional status is more correlated with diabetes mellitus.

Based on cross-sectional data on 3283 Taiwanese men, we investigated whether interactive effects of unhealthy lifestyle behaviors were associated with testicular function. The men were recruited from a private screening institute between 2009 and 2015. Lifestyle behaviors (smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity (PA), sleeping habits, and diet) were obtained by a validated self-reported questionnaire. The men provided a semen sample and had blood drawn for sex hormone measurement. Men who smoked and drank had higher testosterone (T) levels (β = 0.81, p < 0.001) than those who neither smoked nor drank. Men who smoked and had high Western dietary pattern scores had higher T levels—by 0.38 ng/mL (p = 0.03). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using a research of non-communicable disease 2016 database from the ministry of health of Indonesia. In total 28558 women, aged 25 – 49 years old were retrieved from the database. Eating habits and cooking methods were measured using a validated food frequency questionnaire. A forward logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association of eating habits and cooking methods with the risk of breast tumors. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using a research of non-communicable disease 2016 database from the ministry of health of Indonesia. In total 28558 women, aged 25 – 49 years old were retrieved from the database. Eating habits and cooking methods were measured using a validated food frequency questionnaire. A forward logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association of eating habits and cooking methods with the risk of breast tumors. Results: Higher education level was positively associated with the incidence of breast tumor (OR = 1.10, 95%CI: 1.01-1.20, p = 0.026).
