The recent development in this segment is the use of workers through technology-mediated platforms known as gig workers. Over the years, there has been an increase in use of gig workers in India as well as abroad for several reasons, like the changing nature of work, availability of technology and work preferences. We start the article by examining reasons for the rise of gig work, followed by an explanation of various types of gig platforms, their characteristics and examples in the Indian as well as global context. We elaborate on some of the risks and challenges faced by Indian companies as they deploy non-standard workers through different online platforms. At the end, we offer some recommendations to the HR fraternity.

Such displacements could be either internal displacement or cross border displacement. In just last year (2019), nearly 24.9 million people have been displaced due to the above cited reasons as per the report of United Nations Refugee Agency. Warsaw International Mechanism has put forth its effort to address the concern of displacements and support humanity along with United Nations, States, few ad-hoc working groups, civil societies and few supporting countries way back in 2016. On one side while the combined and sincere efforts are being made, on the other side the threats in terms of violence, riots, natural disasters, pandemics keep increasing at an alarming rate. Recent Covid-19 is a classic example which are likely to trigger more displacements to be continued in 2020. This has a spillover effect on demand a...

The global displacement scale due to disasters between 2008 and 2014 stands at an alarming rate of over 25 million lives on an average. Chennai floods 2015 has been the trigger for us to visualize the disaster management issue in various dimensions and come up with an approach by leveraging emerging technologies which has the potential to disseminate alerts seamlessly. The objective is to put forth some ideas on utilizing the existing information databases and signals from prevailing alert systems and integrate it using emerging technologies by leveraging the power of digital forces such as Mobility, Social media and Analytics. The proposed conceptual architecture could get data of various types and alerts in real time, process data streams and group them based on metadata and alert appropriate stakeholders. This...
