We present an ultrasonic flowmeter designed according to smart sensors concept, for the measurement of irrigation water flowing through pipelines or open channels, using the ultrasonic transit time approach. The new flowmeter works on the principle

This paper starts with a survey of the main proposals in the area based on the experience gained by the authors in various fields pertaining to manufacturing device modelling, control and supervision, industrial messaging, production management and reengineering methodology. The rational for a multi-agent approach is discussed as the available technologies to support the development of agent-based applications are summarised. Finally an implementation of controlling agents in a flexible manufacturing system is described and discussed.

This brings operating system independent communication capabilities to devices such as NC machine-tools and to the various technical management applications expected in modern workshops, even of small size. Implementation of MMS concepts in the CORBA environment is particularly discussed. Prototype development is under course in an effective industrial platform.

The Cruise Control case study emphasisea the specific features and similarities of both methods. The simulation of the Grafcet model uses an original algorithm. issues about the coherent management of variables in hybrid systems are raised.

The project is inspired by the reference models defined by the ISO/OSI Manufacturing Message Specification for remote machine tool supervision (MMS) and the Open System Architecture within Control Applications (OSACA). Instead of proposing MMS or OSACA protocols for communication, we propose a unified object-oriented solution based on the OMG-CORBA software bus. Adopting a common object-oriented approach for both remote communication and internal architecture of a NC platform is conceivable. It leads to a design very close to the one proposed in the mentioned standards. The consequences of including a Manufacturing Object Messaging System on the NC design model are discussed. A Java and CORBA based demonstration prototype has been developed. The end of the paper describes how we address real-time constraints on communications.

This means tight links between CAM workstations and machining stations. In order to enhance the context oriented capabilities of existing prototypes, an improved specification inspired from the object modeling technique methodology is presented, with particular emphases on the structuring of data and the man-machine interaction related operating modes
