This booklet gives an impression of ten projects conducted in the Province of Utrecht, the Netherlands. In these ten projects, a total of 22 companies were involved. 5000 booklets have already been printed in Dutch and handed out to SMEs for knowledge dissemination. We have received ample requests from the international community, which leads us to believe that there is an international audience for the cases conducted and knowledge gathered. This is why we decided to publish an English version of this booklet. The booklet will be followed by a scientific publication on the knowledge gathered for the academic community. Feel free to contact us for more information on this project

However, obstacles are likely to occur when healthcare and creative researchers work together. Analyzing the startup phase of ten interdisciplinary projects in the field of dementia, overweight and loneliness we found seven strategies to overcome these barriers: use boundary brokers, combine theory, combine research approaches, organize for collaboration, joint activities, separate activities, and use artefacts. As many dementia research projects involve exploring new products and technologies, particularly the use of artefacts might be an interesting strategy to foster the collaboration of healthcare and creative research disciplines.

Service designers improve existing services or design completely new ones. Nothing new so far. Services have been around for centuries, and every service was conceived and designed by someone. However, service design takes a different angle; a different perspective as its starting point: it is a process of creative inquiry aimed at the experiences of the individual user. ‘Service design, insights from 9 case studies’ is the final publication of the Innovation in Services programme. During this programme, creative design agencies applied the methods of service design in nine different projects.

Sketching and modeling are used to quickly explore a product’s shape and configuration. Material aspects of a product are, in comparison, explored completely different, and are selected rather than created. Colors, textures and graphics, are selected by examples found in existing products, samples, or while browsing magazines or the web. We have developed a creative design technique in which we have designers do exactly the opposite. In a two-hour session designers “create” materials in a quick and playful way, while they "select" the spatial arrangement of the product out of a discrete set of shapes. We report of two workshops in industry where we applied this technique. In each workshop we used the materials designers already had, e.g. their moodboards, models, example products, and collections of visual materials. Based on the consi...

Potential benefits of this approach are better knowledge transfer, stakeholder inclusion, and removal of barriers to interactions. Unfortunately, the question whether agile approaches are useful in designing health interventions remains as yet unanswered. To contribute to current knowledge, we analysed the process and results of a large multidisciplinary project with an agile approach. Our case study shows such an approach may indeed be a feasible method for the development of health interventions. The process allowed for a high pace, and good stakeholder inclusion. Some limitations also occurred. The agile approach favours speed over rigour, which hinders integration of user research and scientific evidence in the development process. Multidisciplinary cooperation remains difficult because of the limited availability of experts and stakeholders. Finally, the difficult...

Linkography is a structuralist research approach in which a network of links between design ideas is constructed, based on evidence found in the protocol. This network is then further analyzed to make inferences about the qualities of the design process under investigation. To increase the validity of linkography as a research approach, we still have to verify whether a more creative idea generation process indeed brings forth more creative ideas. The main hypothesis is that ideas with a strong structure of connections with earlier ideas are more ‘creative’ than ideas without such a strong structure of connections. This study is compares the participants’ appraisal of 192 ideas, generated in 4 idea generation meetings with the link structures that lead tot these ideas. The results show a positive relationship between the wellintegratedness of ideas and the creat...

Research paper thumbnail of Uniting qualitative design research and quantitative market research: a case example of userdriven innovation in the Dutch health club industry

This also means developing a new customer relationship focus that goes beyond the consumer orientation that has thus far dominated the practice of marketing. In a user-driven approach, the basis is no longer the product range, the world of the manufacturer or supplier, but rather the experience of the user. This has implications not only for manufacturers and service providers, but also for marketeers and market researchers. We feel that the most commonly used methods and techniques do not answer to the new demands of the market. We have therefore adapted emerging generative user research methods from the field of design as a basis for a truly user-driven market approach. As part of the Fitness in Motion project -a programme aimed at helping the health club industry develop a stronger customer orientation- we applied Contextmapping...

Whren using linkography, the researcher limits him- or herself to assessing whether there is sufficient evidence for a link between each possible combination of ideas to be present (or not). We attempted to strengthen the linkography approach by investigating the potential for using situational -or context- evidence, in addition to similarities in subject matter. This could enhance the reliability of linkography as a method for data analysis. The first objective of this paper is to understand the nature of context indicators for links. The second is to understand their relative importance for determining links between ideas.

This inspired us to explore whether we could engage design students in thinking about moral issues by exploring different ethical frameworks in their designing. As a case environment we chose smart-grid product service combinations. In this paper we first discuss the ethical frameworks of four selected philosophers’: Plato, Rousseau, Kant, & Mill. Then we will describe the student design process, the resulting four smart grid service concepts and the user insights that came from a user evaluation. We discuss how this approach allowed the students to get insights in their own ethical stance and how they allowed users to reflect on possible futures. We also discuss how these ‘probing’ concepts were used within the larger smart grid project.

There is little attention for the time before (mostly preparation by facilitator and invitation of participants) and after the session (maturization of the findings). Yet, through earlier research (e.g. Van der Lugt, 2002) and through our experiences with facilitating creative processes for companies, we came to realize that a participants’ creative process starts well before the beginning of a workshop, and extends well beyond. In the past years, we have explored various ways of widening involvement in creative processes, such as creative problem solving meetings and scenario meetings. In our working definition, a creative group meeting is a group meeting where the group members together generate new knowledge, be it ideas, visions of the future or thoughts and dreams about the use of future products. The main objective i...

Linear approaches are considered insufficient to deal with current dynamic, complex challenges (Conklin, 2005; Snowden, 2002). In order to deal with this, organizations need to improve their adaptivity: to become sensitive to what is happening outside their boundaries, and to act upon external signals in flexible ways. Adaptivity requires a delicate balance between efficiency and innovation (Schwartz, Bransford & Sears, 2005). Organizations that enable an adaptive response open up adaptive space by engaging networks and emergence (Uhl-Bien, 2017). In the last decades, a more strategic role for design and designers has been found to help organizations to deal with complexity and uncertainty in a dynamic world (e.g. Nelson & Stolterman, 2012), especially because of the constructive approach of creating future artefacts ...
