Findings on recreational sports (e.g., scuba diving, rock climbing) indicate that individuals engaging in high-risk recreation tend to exhibit decreases in sensitivity to risk over time, likely due to habituation effects and changes in self-efficacy and competence. Could these results also apply to winter sports performed in avalanche terrain? The present study aimed at exploring the relationship between experiences with avalanche accidents and two measures of avalanche risk perception: fear of and perceived probability of accident involvement. We also investigated relationship with use of safety gear (avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel, and airbag device). Study sample consisted of 214 backcountry skiers from Northern Italy (84% male; age: M = 39.55, SD = 10.07), of which 15.4% reported personal involvement in at least 1 avalanche accident resulting in burial or injury...
After a brief presentation of the main extensions of the classical coefficient of determination (... more After a brief presentation of the main extensions of the classical coefficient of determination ( R 2 ), a new index is proposed that can be used with Logistic Regression Models for ungrouped data. This index is a direct extension of the “classical” coefficient of determination for linear models (link function identity and normal distribution for errors), and they share the same properties. Index performances (including the one proposed here) are compared by means of simulated data.

There is still limited knowledge about the interrelations between the different substances and the diverse aspects of adolescent functioning that may affect this phenomenon. The present cross-national study is aimed to explore the presence of a constellation of different substances and the relationships between substance use and personal and relational resources and vulner-abilities drawn from the problem behaviour theory by Jessor, Donovan, and Costa (199113. Jessor , R. , Donovan , J. E. and Costa , F. M. 1991 . Beyond adolescence: Problem behavior and young adult development , New York : Cambridge University Press . View all references). The sample consisted of 970 Italian and Dutch adolescents. In both countries, cumulative scale analyses showed the presence of a constellation among the different types of substances. Furthermore, the higher the personal resources and the more positive the models the lower the use of different substances by both Dutch and Italian adolescents. Conversely, the higher the relational vulnerabilities the higher also was the involvement in drugs. However, the explained variance was lower with respect to illegal drugs other than marijuana. The findings are also discussed in terms of their suggestions for successful prevention.
