Social capital is considered a vital human resource, and quality of life (QoL) is an important measure of human health embedded in a physical, mental, and social context. No studies have reported on the association between social capital and QoL in Chinese urban residents. We performed a cross-sectional study to investigate social capital in urban community residents of West China, and its relationship with QoL. Our study was carried out between June and July of 2015. A total of 1136 households were surveyed. The Chinese-translated version of the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12) and social capital questionnaire were used to evaluate people's QoL and social capital. Associations between QoL and social capital were evaluated by 3 logistic regression analyses. A total of 1136 adult participants aged 18 years and older completed the questionnaire. Young residents were more likely to have lower second (SC2), third (SC3), and fourth (SC4) dimensions of social capital. Migrants and residents with higher education levels and high incomes showed lower SC1 and SC2 relative to other participants, and employed residents had relatively low SC1. Unmarried residents had lower SC2 and SC3. Without adjustment for potential confounding factors, participants with higher SC2 had higher average scores for mental components (MCS) of QoL [odds ratio (OR) = 1.48, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.09-2.02], and the same was seen for SC3 (OR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.24-2.34). After adjusting for socioeconomic status (SES) and risk factors, SC2 and SC3 were still significantly associated with MCS. Social capital was not significantly associated with physical components of QoL in any of the 3 logistic regression models. In conclusion, social capital is related to MCS of QoL, and increasing it may be an effective way to promote health. Abbreviations: 95% CI = 95% confidence interval, IRB = Institutional review board, MCS = mental components, OR = odds ratio, PCS = physical components, QoL = quality of life, SC1 = first dimension of social capital (social networks), SC2 = second dimension of social capital (community sentiment and cohesion), SC3 = third dimension of social capital (social support), SC4 = fourth dimension of social capital (trust and security), SD = standard deviation, SES = socioeconomic status, SF-12 = Short-Form Health Survey.

Using a hearing aid as an attempt to improve the hearing problem can positively affect the quality of life for these people. This research was aimed to assess satisfaction of hearing impaired patients with their hearing aids regarding the employed technology and style. Materials and methods: This descriptive-analytic cross-sectional research was conducted on 187 subjects with hearing loss who were using a hearing aid. The subjects were over 18 years of age and were using a hearing aid for at least 6 months. The Persian version of Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life (SADL) questionnaire was the instrument which was used for assessing satisfaction with the hearing aid. Cronbach's alpha was calculated to be 0.80 for instrument reliability. Results: A significant difference was observed among satisfaction subscales' mean scores with hearing aid technology. Also a significant difference was observed between the total satisfaction score and the hearing aid model. With respect to the analysis of satisfaction with the hearing aid and its style, cost and services was the only subscale which showed a significant difference (P=0.005). Conclusion: Respondents using hearing aids with different technology and style were estimated to be quite satisfied. Training audiologists in using more appropriate and fitting hearing aids in addition to using self-reporting questionnaires like SADL for estimating patients' social condition and participation in their life can essentially change their disability condition and countervail their hearing loss.

The purpose of this study was to report results for universal newborn NHS in a cohort of children born in the southwestern region of Iran, as part of a national screening program set up by the Iranian National Health System. Methods: During this cross-sectional study, which took place between March 2013 and April 2016, healthy newborns were screened using transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) and automated auditory brainstem responses (AABRs) methods at several points in time as early as possible after birth. Screening followed a two-stage strategy and newborns referred after the second-stage screening were scheduled for diagnostic evaluation. Results: A total of 92,521 newborns were screened in the urban (n ¼ 67,780) and rural (n ¼ 24,741) regions. Hearing impairment was confirmed in 223 (2.41 per 1000) newborns. One hundred forty-one (1.52 per 1000) of these newborns were affected bilaterally. More than 87% of these infants (195/223) showed a sensorineural hearing loss, while the defect was found to be conductive in 12 cases (P < 0.001). Of the 223 cases with hearing loss, 28 (12.5%) infants had auditory neuropathy. The majority of the infants, in both urban and rural regions, showed severe hearing impairment. We did not observe any significant difference among the incidences associated with gender (p ¼ 0.29). Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that universal newborn hearing screening program is an adequate program for southwestern of Iran with high coverage, low referral rate, and good follow-up rate.

This research aimed to determine the level of satisfaction concerning hearing aids in elderly people with hearing impairment based on the type and degree of hearing loss. Methods: An analytic cross-sectional research design was used; the sample included 40 elderly people who used hearing aids. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) age classification, participants were divided into two age groups: 65-74 years (n=20) and 75-90 years (n=20). Satisfaction levels were assessed using a standard satisfaction with amplification in daily life (SADL) questionnaire. Results: Satisfaction levels in the 65-74 age group were significantly higher than that in the 75-90 age group (p=0.02). Participants with mixed hearing loss revealed higher satisfaction levels than participants with sensorineural hearing loss (p=0.02). On the negative effects dimension, participants with severe hearing loss exhibited significantly higher satisfaction levels than participants with moderate or moderate to severe hearing loss (p=0.01). Conclusion: Total satisfaction mean scores were relatively high in the elderly participants. Negative features could be reduced via careful consultation regarding the aids’ amplifying capabilities and limitations in groups with moderate or moderate to severe hearing loss.
