These measurements have been analysed to provide data on natural frequencies of response for these units operating in a range of water depths and storm loading conditions in the Central North Sea. The units have been placed at a variety of sites with both clay and sand seabed conditions. Some locations consisted of layered soils conditions. The response of the units at these locations and the implied levels of fixity have been compared with predictions based on the SNAME T&R 5-5A method of jack-up assessment. The trends observed in the measured and theoretical results show generally good agreement, but there is strong evidence that the theoretical methods significantly under-predict the actual seabed fixity available to this type of unit. The paper reviews the differences found between measurements and predictions and discu...

Three different elevations spanning the conductor were instrumented with environmentally protected strain gauges while the rig was operating. The objective was to gather data for selected storms for subsequent spectral and statistical analyses and to validate finite-element analysis (FEA) of a drilling-conductor system. The response amplitude operators (RAO's) from the analysis showed good agreement with measured RAO's. This agreement increases confidence in the validity of the loading and response calculation methods currently available for the design of drilling conductors. In the frequency analysis, the computed natural periods showed good agreement with those measured under different drilling conditions. Measurements showed tha...

Attention was paid to defining boundary conditions and ensuring that ioadings were correctly measured. Test plates were of 6 mm thick high-yield structural steel, containing residual stresses and initial out-of-flatness. Tests measured the effect of small transverse stresses on the longitudinal strength. The plate strenoths obtained are compared with small-scale tests, finite-element and finite-difference strength analyses, and present and proposed design rules. The use of a sinoie strength interaction curve is seen to create problems in formulating design rules. Tests are also reported on plates under uniaxial loading with unloaded edges constrained to remain straight. NOTATION a Plate length b Plate width ex Longitudinal shortening, expressed as a strain 25 J. Construct.
