As we intimated in our Editorial for the launch of the JBA earlier this year, in some ways there did not seem to be a need to add to the various subdisciplines of anthropology already dealing with organization, work, industry, corporate affairs, and other forms of economic and applied anthropology. And yet, as we saw it, there is a constituency of readers who think of themselves as business, rather than economic, applied, organizational, corporate and so on, anthropologists. So what makes them different? And how might we appeal to that sense of difference? This line of thinking has underpinned the first two issues of the JBA. Given that we ourselves have not been entirely sure about how far to spread our sub-disciplinary net, we decided that I should get in touch with a number of distinguished scholars around the world who might have an interest in business anthropology, even though they were sometimes working in different disciplinary fields. Perhaps they would

What is sociological about the sociology of economics ? Some recent developments, By Marion Fourcade-Gourinchas. Academy of Social Sciences (CASS)", Session (No 51): "Adaptations to Globalisation: The role of social capital". This new issue of the Economic Sociology Newsletter contains material and reflexions for a better understanding of Pierre Bourdieu's contribution to economic sociology. Bourdieu never supported "overspecialization" inside the social sciences and was very reluctant to define his contribution to the scientific knowledge of economic activities as a particular kind of " economic sociology". Lehman Brothersfiledfor bankruptcy and nearly caused a meltdown of the financial system. This article looks at the situation before Lehman went bankrupt and how this event came to trigger a financial panic during the fall of 2008 and early 2009. Two key ideas inform the analysis. The first is that what triggers financial panics are typically hidden losses. The second is that confidence plays a key role in financial panics and that confidence can be conceptualized as a belief that action can be based on proxy signs. rather than on direct information about the situation itself.

This article raises the question of whether it is possible to have not only an economic concept o... more This article raises the question of whether it is possible to have not only an economic concept of interest but also a sociological one, and, if so, what such a concept would be like. By way of an answer, the history of how sociologists have tried to use the concept of interest in their analyses is traced, starting with Gustav Ratzenhofer in the 1890s and ending with Pierre Bourdieu and John Meyer today. This focus on what sociologists have to say about interest represents a novelty as the conventional histories of this concept pass over the contribution by sociologists in total silence. The various attempts by sociologists to use the concept of interest are divided into two main categories: when interest is seen as the driving force in social life, and when interest is seen as a major force in social life, together with other factors. I also discuss the argument by some sociologists that interest is of little or no importance in social life. The different strategies for how to handle the concept of interest in a sociological analysis are discussed in the concluding remarks, where it is argued (following Weber and Bourdieu) that interests can usefully be understood to play an important role in social life, but together with other factors.

The basic argument in this article is that sociology and social science more generally are today ... more The basic argument in this article is that sociology and social science more generally are today severely hampered by the lack of attention being paid to theory. Methods--qualitative as well as quantitative methods--have proven to be very useful in practical research (as opposed to theory); and as a result they dominate modern social science. They do not, however, do the job that belongs to theory. One way to redress the current imbalance between methods and theory, it is suggested, would be to pay more attention to theorizing, that is, to the actual process that precedes the final formulation of a theory; and in this way improve theory. Students of social science are today primarily exposed to finished theories and are not aware of the process that goes into the production and design of a theory. Students need to be taught how to construct a theory in practical terms ('theorizing'); and one good way to do so is through exercises. This is the way that methods are being taugh...
