The main points discussed are (1) the relative importance of the number of sections compared to the number of segments taken around the contour in each section; and (2) the fact that the error in the estimated surface area may actually become worse as the number of sections increases. The number of sections should be made large enough to reproduce the three-dimensional shape of the object, but not too much larger; the number of segments around the contours should then be made large enough that the segment size is similar to or smaller than the section thickness.

FAI is based on a general-purpose image-processing system running on a DEC PDP-11. The images contain 144 X 144 pixels with 64 gray levels. FAI permits manual definition of difficult fringe-pattern boundaries. The fringes are traced by an algorithm which makes use of the 2-1) gray-level image information. The user can interactively guide the system and correct errors. The application of the system to analyzing moire fringes defining eardrum shape is described.

Research paper thumbnail of Finding What Doesn't Fit": Adjusting the Focus on Education in Country Towns as a Limiting Case for the "Learning or Earning" Years

In this paper a rural town is described as a case, among others, not fitting policy regulations for "learning or earning" in Years 11 and 12 in Queensland. It is argued, through a description of the production and reproduction of the town's service economy, that neither the curriculum nor the workforce can be placed within a theory of social and economic networking underpinning policies on retention and pathways upon which the Queensland legislation rests. Cases such as these are difficult to uncover because factors that best describe their true economic and social conditions tend to be compressed within statistical reporting models for educational regions. While the focus is on a rural town, the purpose is to advance policy design and implementation that seeks to sustain educational change in diverse conditions.

The aim in this paper is to cast a brief light on the sociology of education in Australian universities, and from this to provide an example of the use of sociological concepts to construct a school system in a semester. It is argued that teaching through concepts provides a practical theory for an understanding of the system of schools which is more appropriate for teachers in training than traditional approaches where learning and applying sociological theory is the aim. A method is proposed for teaching sociology through concepts that relate institutional categorisation and order to structural and demographic factors outside of schools that influence types of curriculum and differences in educational outcomes. Described are ways students work with empirical materials to construct the system and build visual representations of schools in the state, private and independent sectors. It is concluded that the course has theoretical portability and provides a practical understanding of a system and a method to carry into teacher's professional lives.

Problems of sustainability are most at issue in country towns and districts which are “rural and remote”, or distant from coastal cities and regional towns. In this paper we argue that problems of keeping policy and programs alive should be seen in the conditions in which they have to be conceived and set in place. Included here are: the social conditions in which a policy and ways to implement it are accepted as a 'common wisdom'; and, the match or mismatch they have with the economic and social conditions across urban and rural locations. Brief case studies, based on demographic information about three rural towns, are then used to document difficulties for policy implementation that matters for people in a rural and remote community. Much of the analysis is based on Sher and Sher's (1994) reference to making policy “as if rural peo...

But it falls short in schools where poor academic results are reproduced, as is illustrated in an analysis of misbehaviour in an Australian rural school. It is argued that explanations of behaviour management are over psychologised. That is, rather than being of assistance, the approach can generate out-of-reach and unworkable strategies, and place the staff in indecisive positions not open to rational choice explanations. Rather, in considering misbehaviour, it is argued that three factors need to be considered: how classroom interaction is ordered, the institutional effects of disengagement from learning, and a resulting struggle between a school’s official order and the student expressive order. This paper illustrates how relations between these orders determine the social form a school operates from, and towards which changes should be directed. A social psychology is sketched around these points and considered according to Durkheim’s criteria for social facts.
