The term commitment is commonly used to signify agreements among individuals. However, from a psy... more The term commitment is commonly used to signify agreements among individuals. However, from a psychological perspective a commitment can be described as an irrevocable decision which controls behavior. From this perspective the identification of a client's basic commitments would be a powerful tool in a therapy situation. In this paper, a cognitively based model of commitment was described along with its implications for therapy. A commitment was operationally defined as a highly general linguistic proposition with accompanying affect and images. The more general the proposition and the higher the intensity of associated affect, the more powerful the attitude in terms of controlling behavior. An example was provided of a client who was able to identify and subsequently change an attitude which was controlling her behavior.

Specifically, this book suggests a unique strategy for classroom questioning: questioning sequences. Research indicates that the intentional use of targeted questions in a coordinated sequence is an effective way to elicit students’ prior knowledge, prompt the discovery of new information, and deepen and extend students’ learning in all content areas.
