This is particularly unfortunate because of the emphasis in Korean culture on family cohesion and obligations. To address these issues, we explored in our study the well-being of the parents of divorced adult children as well as intergenerational relationships among the members of Korean families. Total 113 parents participated (39 males and 74 females), age ranged from 46 to 65. Of the total participants surveyed, 29% were parents of divorced children (N=33), with the remainder having children in intact marriages (N=80). The measures examined four areas: (1) demographics, (2) parental psychological well-being, (3

Influenced by the United States, the new curriculum emphasizes the development of academic skills and stresses the values of individualism and assertiveness. In addition, there is increasing pressure for "accountability." As a result of these changes, teachers are faced with the dilemma of administering a curriculum that emphasizes values that are in some respect opposite to the cultural traditions of Mexican families, with virtually no resources to support the effort. Data were collected from interviews, focus groups, and document analysis over an 8-week period. The kindergarten teachers participating in the study discussed their concerns regarding the conflicts between school and home, the lack of coordination among levels of education, and the change from a constructivist teaching approach to an outcomes-based approach. The study provides a deeper understanding about what is gained and what is lost when a decentralized curriculum is designed at the national level and implemented in local settings. Some insight is provided into how well the new curriculum is serving the needs of the different ethnic groups in a country with ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse populations. Data collection involved document analysis, site visits, and interviews with officials from the State Department of Education along with teachers and school administrators in four secondary schools in southeast Mexico. Findings suggest that the emphasis on homogeneously implementing national standards without consideration of local context have created a situation where the tension between national standards and local needs could affect the quality of students' education. The educational possibilities for children of indigenous ancestry are particularly at risk. National versus local is a significant topic both in Mexico and the United States, as is the issue of diverse ethnic groups and the extent to which students will be well served by national curriculum standards. Contains 5 notes, 18 references, and a table of data. (BT) Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made from the original document.

Congress sought to achieve two goals with the CWA: eliminate pollution discharges into the nation's waters, and achieve national uniformity in a water pollution control scheme. However, Congress recognized that complete elimination of all pollution discharges was not immediately achievable. As a result, it created a dual-permitting scheme under the CWA, authorizing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue permits for the discharge of pollutants into navigable waters, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) to issue permits for the discharge of "dredged or fill" material into navigable waters.
