If this progress is t o continue, however, and if the results of current work are t o be integrated into a broad synthetic understanding of New World slavery in general and of individual slave societies in particular, it seems to me that a significantly broader theoretical perspective within which t o view these societies is required. It is t o the development of one possible perspective of this sort, with elements drawn freely from the work of others,l-that I address myself. This is a perspective which, although it can be dealt with here in the most summary fashion only, and will not perhaps find ready acceptance by many of those participating in this conference, does touch upon a variety of the problems raised in this and preceding sessions.
