Two species were identified, neither related to this taxon. The specific status of T. hondurensis Fruhstorfer, 1907 is confirmed and a new Mexican subspecies of T. columbiana Fruhstorfer, 1907 is described. Its distribution, subspecies and areas of sympatry are discussed.

A study of Mexican Morpho specimens of the subgenus Iphimedeia Fruhstorfer, 1912 was carried out.... more A study of Mexican Morpho specimens of the subgenus Iphimedeia Fruhstorfer, 1912 was carried out. Examination of the male genitalia revealed three species which, when compared against published images or those received from other researchers, were identified as Morpho justitiae Salvin & Godman, 1868, M. aquarius Butler, 1872 (whose original taxonomic status is restored), and a new species, described herein. Analysis of somatic characters and wing coloration showed regional convergences and inter-regional divergences that suggest three altithermal refuge and diversification zones in Mexico; that the species conform to Halffter´s (1978) Montane Mesoamerican Dispersal Pattern; and that their presence in Mexico possibly predates the Kansas glaciation. Finally, Morpho theseus Deyrolle, 1860, is not present in Mexico.

This figure is compared against bumblebees and wasps, verifying its identification as a moth. In addition, the pictographic style of the glyph is compared against those of the teotihuacan, mexica and chalca cultures, coming to recognize its own style, with Teotihuacan reminiscences. KEYWORDS: Xicotepec Codex, XVI Century, image, Euchormiini, Arctiinae, Erebidae.

Based on the above, Prepona xenagoras Hewitson, 1875, Prepona neoterpe Honrath, 1884, Prepona brooksiana Godman y Salvin, 1889, Prepona lygia Fruhstorfer, 1904, and Prepona ibarra Beutelspacher, 1982, are reinstated to species status. Likewise, Prepona garleppiana Staudinger, 1898, is considered as a valid species. In addition, three new subspecies of P. ibarra Beutelspacher are described, and differences between each subspecies and their distribution is noted.

One new subspecies is described and we discuss subspecific differences and distribution range characters, highlighting a relationship with possible glacial refuges. This study provides evidence for the important role of the Guatemalan Montes Cuchumatanes, Mexican Macizo Central Chiapaneco, Sierra Madre de Chiapas, and Central American volcanic belt; first as dispersal barriers, and second as refuges and developing centers for endemic taxa. Also, we note the importance of using related fauna and ecological data differences to resolve biogeographical and taxonomic challenges.
