Pedro's authority in the Brazilian empire. The hypothesis raised here is that the commercial network in which the Espírito Santo was involved in the first decades of the 18 th century was fundamental to the adherence. That decision, in turn, was taken by men with particular interests who were linked to one another through economic and political activities. It was sought, therefore, to find out how those commercial networks influenced the political decisions of those social actors in the early 1820's. Those networks had as main destinations the provincial ports and Rio de Janeiro, the last as the extraprovincial trade harbor most visited by vessels from Espírito Santo. Those networks were also moved by a class of local merchants that bailed trips starting from Espírito Santo. Those merchants held considerable possessions and took part in the provincial public life by occupying military, bureaucratic and religious offices projecting them in regional social life. The concrete interest of those merchants was to keep and expand trade networks in which they were involved. Thus, this study was conducted after the observation of fluctuations in sea-market contacts of Espírito Santo, in the period 1815-1825, comparing them with the political events in the years 1820-1823, a period marked by the Porto Revolution establishing the Lisbon Courts, and the year following the LISTA DE ILUSTRAÇÕES
