Working hard at the life of a cavalryman, he was promoted through the ranks to Maréchal des Logis Chef in 1804, when the Grande Armée was at Boulogne, preparing for the planned invasion of England. He took part in the Campaigns of 1805, 1806 and 1807 where he was wounded twice. Dupuy was advanced to the officer ranks and awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1807 for his valorous conduct. In 1809 he was selected as an Aide-de-Camp to General Jacquinot. He remained in this position through the Campaigns of 1809 and 1812, again wounded, and was promoted to Chef d’Escadron in the 7th Hussars after the burning of Moscow. Following the disastrous retreat, he took part in the Campaign of 1813 in Germany, was wounded, and captured at Altenburg in 1813 and remained in captivity until 1814. Rallying to Napoleon after his return from exile in 1815, he fought at Waterloo, and afterwards, was called upon to oversee the disbanding of the 7th Hussars. He was placed on the inactive list due to his allegiance to Napoleon and returned to his home.
Dupuy’s memoirs read like an adventure novel, but they actually took place! Due to their importance, his exploits are often quoted in part by authors, but are offered in their entirety here in the English language. This historically significant account tells the magnificent story of a brave and loyal officer of the French light cavalry of the First Empire.
