Funding for this proposal would support the hiring of nationally recognized consultants to advise on three specific aspects of rare material preservation and display, including: 1) Temperature and humidity; 2) Lighting and energy usage; and 3) Sustainable architectural design. The goal of the project is to develop an integrated sustainability plan achieved through an interdisciplinary team-based planning process that can serve as a model for other libraries. Support from the Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections program will help us explore best practices for advanced sustainable energy use.

It underwent a renovation between spring 2016 and fall 2017. Payson Library was closed during this renovation, and a Library Hub was established as a temporary service point and library information and teaching center on campus. Maintaining market share led to rolling out new services such as RAPID-ILL, repurposing a graduate campus library for increased study spaces, and reliance on a strong library liaison program. Predictably, there was a sharp reduction in patron visits, but there was success in providing reference, instruction, and access to the collections.

Research paper thumbnail of Degradation product emission from historic and modern books by headspace SPME/GC–MS: evaluation of lipid oxidation and cellulose hydrolysis

Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 2011

The headspace over the naturally aging books, stored upright in glass chambers, was monitored over a 24-h period, enabling the identification of a wide range of organic compounds emanating from the whole of the book. The detection of particular straight chain aldehydes, as well as characteristic alcohols, alkenes and ketones is correlated with oxidative degradation of the C 18 fatty acid constituency of paper. The relative importance of hydrolytic and oxidative chemistry involved in paper aging in books published between 1560 and 1939 was examined by comparing the relative abundances of furfural (FUR) a known cellulose hydrolysis product, and straight chain aldehydes (SCA) produced from the oxidation of fatty acids in paper. The relative abundance of furfural is shown to increase across the 379-year publication time span. A comparison of relative SCA peak areas across the series of books examined reveals that SCA emission is more important in the cotton/linen rag books than in the ground wood books.

Considerable time, effort, and money are being invested by many libraries and archives in protective housing, rebinding, conservation, and preservation microfilming programs. These activities are expensive. Therefore it makes good fiscal sense to delay the need for these costly activities by making an effort to preserve library materials in good condition for as long as possible.
