The conservation of its geo and biodiversity is decisive, given the growth in its demand, in particular for tourism and leisure activities. In addition to their immediate physical perception, they are spaces of science and knowledge and a resource for geoeducation to promote the natural and cultural values held. The creation of geoparks constituted a new paradigm in which geosciences, territories, their heritage (material and immaterial) and the ways of life of their communities are disseminated. In this context, geoparks are based on integrated territorial approaches to the enhancement, preservation and promotion of education, biodiversity, geological heritage, tourism and scientific research, among others. Tourism, as a strategy for geoeducation and territorial valorisation, is in the mission of Estrela Geopark, promoting educational programs wit...

Students from six countries (Brazil, England, Finland, Iceland, Portugal, and the United States of America) were asked to free-list as many animals as possible and state where they had seen or learned about the animals. The results were analyzed and they indicate that 1) Students are aware of animals. 2) Students are more aware of mammals as examples of animals. 3) There is a globally shared folk biological knowledge of animals. 4) Students learn about animals during sociocultural interactions. The educational implications are discussed.

We analysed primary school pupils’ conceptions and their learning difficulties by carrying out a cross-sectional study. Conceptions of respiration and smoking of young pupils (5/6 to 8/9 year old) were analysed before the first formal teaching of the topic and we followed their conceptual change immediately after teaching and one year after. We focused on the anatomo-physiology of the respiratory tract as well as on the unhealthy effects of smoking. The aim was to identify not only patterns of children’s previous ideas about breathing and smoking unhealthy effects but also epistemological and didactical obstacles to learning. Several patterns on the passage of tobacco in the smoker’s body were created from children before teaching. Significant differences (p 0.05). The use of these patterns of children’s previous ideas about breathing and smoking may be relevant for teachers to use them in the process of pupils’ conceptual change.

In this study we looked at the effects of stainless steel corrosion products on spleen, in order to evaluate their potential immunotoxicological effects. For this purpose stainless steel, type AISI 31 6L, was electrochemically dissolved in a physiological salt solution. The final solution, containing 490 t~g/ml Fe, 224 I~g/ml Cr and 1 50 ~tg/ml Ni, was injected subcutaneously in mice. After several periods of time (4, 10 and 14 days) spleens were removed and analysed for: (a) their contents in Fe, Cr and Ni, (b) histological alterations, (c) enumeration of cellular populations. Results showed that stainless steel corrosion products accumulated in spleen, caused histological alterations, and induced changes in cellular populations. When compared to chromium and nickel, iron was the metal ion preferentially accumulated in spleen. The increase of the multinucleated giant cell population was accompanied by depletion of lymphocyte populations. This study indicates that stainless steel corrosion products can spread systemically and accumulate in spleen inducing histological and cellular alterations which may give rise to immunotoxicological consequences.

In order to understand how school textbooks refer the human's position in nature we analysed how the axis of analysis "Human as guest versus Humans as owners of nature" is present in the three topics of environmental education-Ecosystems, Pollution and Use of Resource-in textbooks of 14 countries from Europe, Africa and Middle East. A specific grid of analysis, which was constructed in the context of a European Project BIOHEAD CITIZEN was used in this study. Results show that this axis of analysis is present in the majority of textbooks addressing the above three topics but not in the "Biodiversity" topic. Textbooks for 12-15 years old pupils were the ones having more occurrences than those for 6-11 or 16-18 years old. The textbooks present mainly an ecocentric position, whereas the aesthetic, ethical and cultural aspects are limited and inadequate, limiting the full perspective of education for sustainable development.
