After an introduction of the spaces and their principal users, fundamental concepts borrowed from ecological psychology are defined. Then using these concepts, the behavioral significance of the environment is illustrated in a comparison of two case studies. The concepts employed here are shown to allow a discussion of the important effect of environment on behavior without producing deterministic distortions.

Problems are identified in relation to stable cities, urbanizing areas, and developing resorts in the wildlands. The visual problems of urbanization are also discussed in relation to physical impacts such as unstable soils, flooding hazards, and wildfires.

Despite numerous economic and political pressures, public support for environmental protection continues to grow and many innovative approaches addressing Prague's greenspace problems are being tested and implemented.

In the rapidly developing county of Princes Georges, streetside trees were dominated by non-native species. Anne Arundel County, with its moderate urban growth, had a higher percentage of native species than Prince Georges, but a lower percentage than Wicomico. In the slowly developing county of Wicomico, native species dominated its composition. Structurally, each of the three counties had a preponderance of small diameter trees (< 15 cm dbh). However, a comparison among counties revealed that both Wicomico and Anne Arundel Counties had higher densities of large diameter trees (>30 cm dbh) than Prince Georges County.

In regression analysis, percentage tree crown cover declined and percentage impervious cover increased with increases in the sample cities' population totals according to the general relationship y = aebx; where y = percent cover, x = population; values for a and b were determined by regres The coefficient of determination for tree crown cover was 0.81 and for areal proportion of highly developed land use, 0.93. The eight cities' mean tree cover ranged from 18 to 38%; highly developed land-use areas accounted for 6–19% of cities' areas. Available crown space for tree crowns also declined with increasing population. Tree crown cover as a percentage of available crown space was only weakly correlated with population size.
