After defining voice as "the nature or quality of the person you hear and sense behind the words," Foxfurther distinguishes itfrom tone and persona. Fox provides several examples and analyses of appropriate and inappropriate volees. ESPwriters, the author maintains, oftenfocus so heavily on purpose, audience, and form, that they bury their human voice. Fox argües that this is a tragedy, since a human voice not only enhances clarity and coherence, but also helps writers gain their reader 's acceptance and trust. Specific guidelines and assignments for helping writers achieve an "informative yet human " voice conclude the article. Both of the following documents use English for the same very specific purpose. (All of the example documents in this article are authentic; however, the writers' ñames and other identifying information have been changed.)

Yet such commerce will continue until we ban TV commercials from our schools, Mr. Fox warns. "What's advertised on Channel One?" "Cinnaburst," replied Eric, a ninth-grader. "You know - that gum with those little red dots and -" "No," injected Lisa, "those are flavor crystals." Eric paused and muttered, "Oh yeah, flavor crystals." He quickly continued describing the other ads he'd seen on Channel One, which beams news and MTV-esque commercials for Skittles candy, Gatorade, and other products to eight million students daily. When Lisa corrected her classmate on the commercial's wording, the others nodded in agreement. Interviewing more than 200 rural Missouri kids tells me that these commercials penetrate deeply into their language, thinking, and behavior. In one year of exposure to Channel One, students can watch 700 commercials,...

This allows him to take the reader with him into the pond, seeing the bulging frog eyes, and feeling with his toes the endangered pond of these frogs. He steps into the pond to give his reader information. He drifts into the frogs' lives to show the seriousness of the situation which is no longer just about his day with the frogs, but about their losing a habitat, as similar ponds around the country have become endangered. He wades into a murky area where he is not just a journalist, nor a novelist, though he creates drama and teaches a lesson. He's swimming in the literary-journalistic waters of creative nonfiction.

For an evaluation to effect change, three conditions should occur: informing, collaborating, and mixing. The evaluation of a Wheaton College (Massachusetts) graduation requirement that students complete a minimum of at least one out-of-class learning experience provides an example of an evaluation that served as a catalyst for change. The requirement moved from a five-step prescribed, structured reflection process to a three-step student-centered reflection process integrated into the academic community. As the example from Wheaton College shows, for an evaluation to have _ effective use, it has to be a shared, collaborative educational venture between the evaluator and those involved in the program.
