Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 578 people with an age range of 18-65. The sample was probabilistic and stratified according to sex, age and socio-economic class, proportional to the 2000 demographic census data of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics-IBGE. The COPCORD core questionnaire was used for all subjects, and a rheumatologist evaluated those patients who presented pain and/or functional disability. Laboratory tests and radiographs were carried out in some patients to confirm the diagnosis. Results: One hundred and seventy-six patients (30.4%) with a mean age of 41 (SD 13) and predominantly female had pain. Among the patients with pain, 23.2% were unable to do daily living activities. One hundred and thirty (73.9%) were evaluated by a rheumatologist. Conclusion: The prevalence of musculoskeletal manifestations evaluated by the COPCORD questionnaire was 30.4%.

The aim of this present study was to analyze the quality of life profile of the elderly across different demographic and socioeconomic factors. A cross-sectional study was carried out in two stages, involving 1,958 individuals aged 60 years or more. Health related quality of life (HRQOL) was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire. The lowest scores were found among measures for vitality, mental health and general health and the highest among factors including social functioning and role limitations due to emotional and physical factors. HRQOL was found to be worse among women, in individuals at advanced ages, those who practiced evangelical religions and those with lower levels of income and schooling. The greatest differences in SF-36 scores between the categories were observed in functional capacity and physical factors. The results suggest that healthcare programs for the elderly should take into account the multi-dimensionality of health and social inequalities so that interventions can target the most affected elements of HRQOL as well as the most vulnerable subgroups of the population.

Objectives: To characterize the impact of MM in the Q/L of patients treated in two public institutions of Sao Paulo State, Brazil, using a generic (SF-36) and a specific questionnaire for oncologic patient (QLQ-C30), applied in three different moments: at diagnosis, after the end of clinical treatment and at day +100 after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (ASCT). Patients and methods: From March 2006 to August 2007 we evaluated 49 patients with MM, using the two questionnaires. Analysis was made through ANOVA, Post hoc and T-paired test comparing the three groups. Results: 88.6% of included patients have family budget lower than US$ 600.00/month (Economic Class C, D or E). The generic questionnaire SF-36 demonstrated that Physical Functioning, Role-Physical and Bodily Pain were statistically different in all three groups, favoring the day +100 post-ASCT group (ANOVA). SF-36 still demonstrated improvement in Role-Emotional when MM post treatment group was compared with the day + 100 post-ASCT group (T-paired Test). The QLQ-C30 questionnaire confirmed what had been demonstrated by the SF-36 in relation to the Physical Functioning and Bodily Pain plus improvement in the following aspects: Role Functioning, Fatigue, Lack of Appetite and Constipation, favoring the day + 100 post-ASCT group (ANOVA). QLQ-C30 also detected a significant improvement in Social Aspect in patients with MM after day +100 of ASCT. Conclusion: The specific questionnaire for cancer patients QLQ-C30 seems to be more informative than the generic questionnaire SF-36 and reflects the real benefit of ASCT in Q/L of MM patients from two public Brazilian institutions, which provide assistance for economically challenged population.

Objectives: 1) To characterize the impact of multiple myeloma on the quality of life of patients ... more Objectives: 1) To characterize the impact of multiple myeloma on the quality of life of patients treated in two public institutions in São Paulo State, Brazil, using a generic Short Form 36 Health Survey and a questionnaire specific for oncologic patients (QLQ-C30) upon diagnosis, after the clinical treatment, and at day +100 after autologous stem cell transplantation; 2) to evaluate whether autologous stem cell transplantation can improve the quality of life of our economically challenged population aside from providing a clinical benefit and disease control. Methods: We evaluated 49 patients with multiple myeloma (a total of 70 interviews) using the two questionnaires. The scores upon diagnosis, post-treatment/pre-autologous stem cell transplantation, and at D+100 were compared using ANOVA (a comparison of the three groups), post hoc tests (two-by-two comparisons of the three groups), and paired t-tests (the same case at two different times). Results: Of the included patients, 87.8% had a family budget under US $600 (economic class C, D, or E) per month. The generic Short Form 36 Health Survey questionnaire demonstrated that physical function, role-physical, and bodily pain indices were statistically different across all three groups, favoring the D+100 autologous stem cell transplantation group (ANOVA). The questionnaire specific for oncologic patients, the QLQ-C30 questionnaire, confirmed what had been demonstrated by the Short Form 36 Health Survey with respect to physical function and bodily pain, with improvements in role functioning, fatigue, and lack of appetite and constipation, favoring the D+100 autologous stem cell transplant group (ANOVA). The post hoc tests and paired t-tests confirmed a better outcome after autologous stem cell transplantation Conclusion: The questionnaire specific for cancer patients seems to be more informative than the generic Short Form 36 Health Survey questionnaire and reflects the real benefit of autologous stem cell transplantation in the quality of life of multiple myeloma patients in two public Brazilian institutions that provide assistance for economically challenged patients.

Reproducibility was good, with high correlation coeffi cients (0.68-0.89) and random distribution of data in Bland and Altman plots, without systematic bias. A signifi cant association was observed among AQUAREL domains and those obtained in SF36 domains and the functional class (p<0.01), although signifi cant correlations with the distance walked in the six-minute test were not found. CONCLUSION The Portuguese version of the AQUAREL questionnaire is easy and rapid to apply, and could be used as a specifi c questionnaire to assess quality of life in pacemaker patients.

To examine health-related quality of life in Brazilian patients with systemic lupus erythematosus... more To examine health-related quality of life in Brazilian patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and compare patients using cyclophosphamide (CP) pulse therapy with those who do not use it. Patients with SLE using or not CP completed the SF-36 and SRQ-20 (psychological morbidity) questionnaire. The Lupus Activity Criteria Count (LAAC) assessed SLE disease activity. We studied 102 patients with SLE. The presence of psychological morbidity was associated with all the scores from SF-36. The physical component summary (PCS) of the SF-36 was significantly lower in patients with activity disease and the mental component summary (MCS) was significantly lower in the patients with psychological morbidity. Comparing patients using or not CP, it was not observed in a statistical significant difference in the 8 domains of the SF-36, nor in the PCS and MCS between the two groups. The prevalence of psychological morbidity evaluated by the SRQ-20 has not presented a statistical significant difference between the patients using or not CP. In the multivariate analysis, using the PCS and MCS as separate dependent variables, the most important variable associated with them was psychological morbidity. Cyclophosphamide pulse therapy does not worse health-related quality of life in patients with SLE. The presence of psychological distress is an important factor associated with worse quality of life.

We aimed to understand TAK epidemiology in Rio de Janeiro City in 2020 (i.e., 6,747,815 inhabitants). Methods This was a cross-sectional fieldwork study where physicians who regularly followed TAK patients in public or private practices from Rio de Janeiro were invited to complete a REDCap survey. Patients should fulfill internationally accepted criteria for TAK and be living in the city. The 2020 prevalence was calculated as cases per 1,000,000 inhabitants (106). National government databases were analyzed for comparative prevalence assessment. The incidence rate was estimated using retrospective sections of cases diagnosed between 2010 and 2019; relative incidence risk was assessed by Poisson regression models with robust variance. Results Between May 2020 and May 2021, 114 patients were analyzed. Ninety-seven (85.1%) were female, an...
