Shining a light on dark tourism and visitor sites of death or disaster allows us to better understand issues of global tourism mobilities, tourist experiences, the co-creation of touristic meaning, and ‘difficult heritage’ processes and practices.
Adopting multidisciplinary perspectives from authors representing every continent, the book combines ‘real-world’ viewpoints from both industry and the media with conceptual underpinning, and offers comprehensive and grounded perspectives of ‘heritage that hurts’. The handbook adopts a progressive and thematic approach, including critical accounts of dark tourism history, dark tourism philosophy and theory, dark tourism in society and culture, dark tourism and heritage landscapes, the ‘dark tourist’ experience, and the business of dark tourism.
The Palgrave Handbook of Dark Tourism Studies will appeal to students and scholars with an interest in aspects of memorialisation and morality in sociology, death studies, history, geography, cultural studies, philosophy, psychology, business management, museology and heritage tourism studies, politics, religious studies, and anthropology.

During its 12 years of existence more than 200,000 prisoners were kept there under dehumanizing conditions; 31,951 deaths were registered. After 1915 the concentration camp became a memorial site and museum which was opened to the public in 1965. In the last few years the memorial site and museum at the former Dachau concentration camp has attracted more than 900,000 visitors annually. The majority of the visitors are from foreign countries. However, the number of German visitors and their percentage of all visitors has increased considerably over the last two decades and amounts to 350,000 (or 40% of all visitors). Four major motives for visiting the former concentration camp grounds, its several memorials and a museum with archives, can be distinguished: (1) personal motives (2) political motives (3) historical and educational motives (4) humanitarian motives. In the commemoration of the Holocau...

Historic places honouring the victims of National Socialistic Germany form a wide and expanding network of heritage sites in Europe. Most of the places where the horrific events occurred during 1933–1945 have been broadly denoted as Holocaust memorial sites in the remembrance of the six million Jews who died, and the many other ethnic, religious, social, and political groups which were subjected to persecution. This chapter, therefore, reconstructs the evolution of this memorial landscape. It is important to understand that not only has the memorial landscape been substantially expanded and changed over the years but also the approaches in the study of these sites and their management practices. Ultimately, this chapter gives an overview of the various traditions of research in this field.

Vail and Beaver were awarded to host the World Alpine Ski Championships in 1989, 1999 and 2015. Vail's transformation from a small attractive ski area with an alpine inspired village to an upscale four-season resort environment along an urbanized corridor of 50 miles (70 km) is shown with comparative data. In a close-up section, the growth and change of The Town of Vail is reconstructed from the 1960s to 2010. The tourist area life cycle model, the path metaphor in evolutionary economic geography and the concept of resilience are applied to explaining the growth dynamics in Vail Valley. Vail Resorts as a leading agent of change in the further globalization of the ski resort industry has at last embraced sustainability.

It is maintained here that the research could profit from a combination and integration of different field methods and techniques. This is shown in the case of the European trips of young American and Canadian tourists. In this study, these travelers were mterxriewed, observed, and counted in various ways. The information gained through the different field methods proved to be complementary in nature and allowed counterchecks. The findings were useful both on a macroand micro-level. A comparison of the methods introduced disclosed major advantages and serious shortcomings in each case. Participant observation proved to be a powerful heuristic tool; however, its uses also posed ethical questions.
