However, using analysis of the First amendment, public relations have increasingly been identified as commercial speech which receives limited protection under the U.S. Constitution. This study traces the evolution of the legal framework in which political PR has become associated with commercial speech, and how this association has made Constitutional analysis of political PR more complex. Implications for public relations practitioners and PR's role in democracy are discussed.

Results argue that non-paid activities affect both outcome and percent of votes received. For incumbents, appearances before small groups enhanced vote percentages. For non-incumbents, external endorsements and editorial support from print and broadcast media were positively related to voter response. Evidence indicates that incumbents and challengers use different strategies … and that challengers have something to learn from incumbents.

First, with regard to constraints, it was found that female public relations officers were most likely to occupy the "conscience of the organization" role, whereas their male counterparts characterized a "dominant insider" position. A second important finding was that no differences in uses or style of research were found by glnder. While this is encouraging, it is apparent that there remain environmental constraints-notably administrator expectations-that need to be addressed and that colleges and universities are not practicing, in their public relations offices, what they are teaching in their classroams. FEC. Design/methodology/approach – The approach of this paper examines appellate case law and federal statutes to provide a legal analysis of the history of campaign finance laws and potential impact on public relations practitioners. Findings – This research provides an overview of the evolution of campaign finance case law and federal statues in the USA and provides analysis of how the 2010 Citizens United case and a recent 2012 case, American Trade Partnership, are altering both the political and corporate landscapes. By allowing far greater contribution rights to corporations than any time since 1907, Citizens United is changing the role corporations may directly play in elections at all levels. Further, this impact exhibited differential effects for incumbent and nonincumbent candidates, suggesting that different competitive situations should use different media allocation strategies to enhance behavioral goals. The political campaign is offered as a prototype of successful integrated marketing communications that can serve as an example to consumer goods marketers.

This article provides an overview of some of the inherent internal conflicts within health organizations that may mitigate against the best media relations practices in times of crises. The article surveys some of the predominant theoretical models used for crisis management, and suggests directions for the further development of media relations and crisis communication theory and practice.

A coorientational approach was employed; 90 interviews were conducted with local public health information officers and the health journalists who cover their public health beats across the United States. Results reveal high convergence between PIOs and journalists regarding the importance of more routine health issues on the local public health agenda and somewhat disturbing insight into the availed resources and working relationships of practitioners at local, state and federal public health agencies with each other.
