It is rather the expression and the style of orderings, arrangements, and movements during a phase in the life of an actor, agent, entity, or a structure. As Iver Neumann pointed out in an informal discussion on the notion, liminality has a strong temporal dimension, and as such, its contribution comes from what it points to. In other words, saying about an entity that it is liminal does not necessarily explain its behaviour, does not indicate the steps that it might take, or ideas it might develop in a given circumstance; it does, however, help understand what are the different, often contradictory, parts that make up its identity and actions, uncovering the tools, materials, and strategies that an actor can choose from, or develops, in its dealings with others. There is an element of anticipation, rather than prediction connected to it. Liminality is best understood in relation to social structure, which to a certain extent it precedes and conditions.
