In this study, measurements of moisture of the rooting medium which consisted of perlite was measured with different commonly used sensors; namely, RSU adapter tensiometer, Watermark 200SS, and Waterscout SM100 sensors. Measurements were made at three moistures levels; low (40%), moderate (60%) and high moisture (80%) levels and three temperature levels; low (18 °C), moderate (22 °C) and high temperature (26 °C) levels. Moisture readings of these sensors were compared in terms of precision and accuracy to determine the better sensor for use with computer controlled rooting system. Standard gravimetric method was used to determine moisture level of perlite media for comparison of sensor readings. As a result of the comparison, better readings were obtained from RSU tensiometer in terms of accuracy and precision. The results of the study suggested that the RSU adapter tensiometer can be used for continuous measurement along computer controlled rooting system to keep the moisture of perlite media at desired level needed for better rooting from cuttings for fruit trees reproduction in terms of yield and quality.

Aerodynamic properties are related to their reaction to moving air as in piles or as a single seed/piece. The pressure drops occurring through apricot pit piles for the superficial air velocities ranging from 0.05 to 2.93 m 3 ·m -2 ·s -1 were experimentally determined and mathematically modeled by using Modified Shedd’s equation and Hukill-Ives equation. These experiments were replicated three times. The results of curve fitting suggested that both equations could be used adequately to predict the pressure drop of apricot pit piles with a high goodness of fitting (R 2 >0.92). The terminal velocities of apricot pits, their kernels and hulls were experimentally determined by dropping one sample into upward air flow current inside the transparent cylindrical pipe. These experiments were replicated ten times. The terminal ve...

For this purpose, different temperature and humidity contents were applied. In the result of the study, the effect of interaction of temperature x humidity and temperature on rooting ratio was not significant. On the other hand, humidity content caused significant changes on rooting percentage. The highest rooting ratio (63,11%) was observed in cutting planted in medium with 40% humidity. The lowest rooting percentages were obtained from two other media contained higher humidity compared to medium with 40% humidity. Both temperature and humidity treatment caused significant changes in root length. Among humidity treatment, 80% humidity produced the longest roots. The longest roots were obtained from 22°C of basal heating treatment. In term of the number of root per cutting, significant difference was not found among hum...

Research paper thumbnail of Development of A Rotary Drum Dryer to Dry Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

The secondary metabolites of medicinal and aromatic plants show beneficial biological activities ... more The secondary metabolites of medicinal and aromatic plants show beneficial biological activities (antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidepressant, etc.). Drying is the most common process to decrease the high moisture content of the fresh plant materials to the safe storage final moisture content. Relatively low temperature drying of medicinal and aromatic plants limits the dryer capacity. There is a scientific/technological motivation to develop prototype dryers to accelerate the drying process and to maintain product quality of medicinal and aromatic plants. This article presents the preliminary results of a compressive research project being currently conducted at Gaziosmanpaşa University, Turkey. This project aims to develop/measure the effectiveness of two different prototype dryers including the rotary drum dryer to dry medicinal and aromatic plants in terms of reducing specific drying energy consumption, keeping product quality and accelerating drying process. Research paper thumbnail of Laboratory Evaluation of an Electro-Pneumatic Sampling Method for Real-Time Soil Sensing

Transactions of the ASABE, 2006

Pressurized air was applied for 36 ms across a 2.5 cm diameter cylinder to cut a sample from a soil column and convey the sample along a delivery pipe into a container. An electro-pneumatic regulator valve was used to regulate the air pressure at 550, 690, and 830 kPa (80, 100, and 120 psi) using an analog electrical signal. A two-position solenoid valve controlled by a stand-alone microprocessor was used to control pulse duration. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the effectiveness of positive high-pressure air as a cutting force for different soil conditions. The effects of air pressure level, soil moisture content, soil compaction, and soil type on the quantity of soil sample obtained were investigated. Moisture content and air pressure level were the most significant factors, while compaction was not significant (a = 0.05) in terms of mass of soil obtained. Laboratory test results proved that pressurized air was effective in cutting and transporting a soil sample in a short time period (36 ms) for all different soils studied in this experiment. The electro-pneumatic method was also capable of obtaining a consistent amount of soil sample with a coefficient of variation of less than 20% for any individual treatments in the experimental design. The electro-pneumatic soil sampling method is a viable candidate as a soil sampling system for on-the-go soil analysis.
