Beta thalassemia major is a common genetic disorder, due to abnormalities in human globin (alpha or beta). The highest prevalence rate of disease has been seen in Saudi Arabia, Jordon, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, due to repeated cousin marriages, strong beliefs of cultural and traditional practices and lack of knowledge for the prevention and management of beta thalassemia major. The focus of epidemiologists remained on genetic causes and ignored the social, cultural, religious and psychological factors which preponderate over biological aspects of health. To best of our knowledge, there is no published data on efficacy of liraglutide use among Pakistani population.Our objective was to ascertain the efficacy of liraglutide use among type two diabetes patients. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at the Endocrinology Clinics of Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) Karachi, Pakistan during the period from July 01, 2016 to 30th June, 2017. Liraglutide was prescribed to 68 obese type two diabetes patients with uncontrolled diabetes taking more than one oral medication ± insulin. Starting dose of Liraglutide was 0.6 mg, which was increased to 1.2 mg after 1-2 weeks with further increment to 1.8 mg/day based on tolerance and individual patient preference. The present study investigates the performance of ferrocement panels focused on the mechanical properties, water absorption and durability. A series of specimens were cast with single and double mesh layers. Flexural performance was carried out following sixty days in temperature cycle and in corrosion cell. These results was compared with the controlled sample. The test results shows that the flexural strength performance was reduced by 52% and 35% for single and double layer wire mesh samples respectively followed by corrosion environment. First crack load also changed after completion of sixty temperature cycles. Coccidiosis is one of the most economically important diseases of the poultry, around the globe. ... more Coccidiosis is one of the most economically important diseases of the poultry, around the globe. In order to assess seasonal and age-wise prevalence of coccidiosis individually and with concurrent infections, this study was conducted on commercial poultry farms in and around Multan division, province of Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 28,126 boilers, 4,052 layers and 7,699 golden bird samples, provided by regional farmers and consultants, were examined by microscopy for the diagnosis of coccidiosis. Based on postmortem lesions, several infections including coccidiosis, viral, and miscellaneous diseases were catalogued, whereas samples were cultured to identify concurrent bacterial diseases. Cumulative analysis of this large set of samples revealed a prevalence of 14.16, 11.01, and 19.57% in broiler, layer and golden birds, respectively. Here, we have emphasized economic losses in cattle caused by parasitic diseases due to ecto- and endo- parasites (flies, ticks, mites and helminths). We have outlined different methods/models including economic evaluation techniques and dynamic analysis as a major class, used for the calculation of economic losses caused by parasites in cattle. According to already conducted studies, a decrease in production is mentioned in quantity and percentage while financial losses are expressed in the form of account with respect to per head, herd or for the specific study area. The parasites cause the reduced production and financial losses due to control, treatment and mortality costs. To understand the genetic basis underlying the correlations among heading date and three major yield traits in rice, we investigated the four traits in a diverse and representative core collection of 266 cultivated rice accessions in both long-day and short-day environments, and conducted the genome-wide association study using 4.6 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). There were clear positive correlation between heading date and grain number per panicle, and negative correlation between grain number per panicle and panicle number, as well as different degrees of correlations among other traits in different subspecies and environments. Ozonation and advanced oxidation processes based on photocatalysis (P.C.) and non-thermal plasma ... more Ozonation and advanced oxidation processes based on photocatalysis (P.C.) and non-thermal plasma generated in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in different gas atmospheres were compared for the degradation and mineralization of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in aqueous solutions, using a planar falling film reactor with comparable design. The degradation by using ozone is very effective, but it should be noted that the mineralization measured by the total organic carbon (TOC) removal is low. The reason is the formation of stable towards ozone intermediates, especially low chain carboxylic acids. The fate of these intermediates during the degradation with the different methods has been followed and discussed.

In this context, the EU-funded project ANIMPOL elaborated a process for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers starting from diverse waste streams of the animal processing industry. This article provides a detailed economic analysis of PHA production from this waste biorefinery concept, encompassing the utilization of low-quality biodiesel, offal material and meat and bone meal (MBM). Techno-economic analysis reveals that PHA production cost varies from 1.41 €/kg to 1.64 €/kg when considering offal on the one hand as waste, or, on the other hand, accounting its market price, while calculating with fixed costs for the co-products biodiesel (0.97 €/L) and MBM (350 €/t), respectively. To date, there is no vaccine available for this pathogen. We attempted to exploit the genomic and proteomic information of P. aeruginosa though reverse-vaccinology approaches to unveil the prospective vaccine candidates. P. aeruginosa strain PAO1 genome was subjected to sequential prioritization approach following genomic, proteomics and structural analyses. We examined time-dependent effect of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) at a rate of 2000 mg kg(-1)... more We examined time-dependent effect of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) at a rate of 2000 mg kg(-1) soil on Cynodon dactylon litter (3 g kg(-1)) decomposition in an arid sandy soil. Overall, heterotrophic cultivable bacterial and fungal colonies, and microbial biomass carbon were significantly decreased in litter-amended soil by the application of nanoparticles after 90 and 180 days of incubation. Time dependent effect of nanoparticles was significant for microbial biomass in litter-amended soil where nanoparticles decreased this variable from 27% after 90 days to 49% after 180 days. IONPs decreased CO2 emission by 28 and 30% from litter-amended soil after 90 and 180 days, respectively. These observations indicated that time-dependent effect was not significant on grass-litter carbon mineralization efficiency. In this study, we address this issue for the small ruminant parasite Haemonchus contortus in the Punjab, Pakistan. This region provides an opportunity to compare H. contortus populations that have been subjected to a prolonged period of frequent benzimidazole drug treatments on government farms with parasite populations that have been exposed to little or no drug treatment in neighbouring pastoral herds. Adult H. contortus worms were collected from the abomasa of small ruminants from three government farms frequently using benzimidazole drugs, and closed to animal movement, for over 30 years and also from from eighteen pastoral herds subject to minimal drug selection. To understand the genetic basis underlying the correlations among heading date and three major yield traits in rice, we investigated the four traits in a diverse and representative core collection of 266 cultivated rice accessions in both long-day and short-day environments, and conducted the genome-wide association study using 4.6 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Ozonation and advanced oxidation processes based on photocatalysis (P.C.) and non-thermal plasma ... more Ozonation and advanced oxidation processes based on photocatalysis (P.C.) and non-thermal plasma generated in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in different gas atmospheres were compared for the degradation and mineralization of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in aqueous solutions, using a planar falling film reactor with comparable design. The degradation by using ozone is very effective, but it should be noted that the mineralization measured by the total organic carbon (TOC) removal is low. The reason is the formation of stable towards ozone intermediates, especially low chain carboxylic acids. The fate of these intermediates during the degradation with the different methods has been followed and discussed.

In this context, the EU-funded project ANIMPOL elaborated a process for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers starting from diverse waste streams of the animal processing industry. This article provides a detailed economic analysis of PHA production from this waste biorefinery concept, encompassing the utilization of low-quality biodiesel, offal material and meat and bone meal (MBM). Techno-economic analysis reveals that PHA production cost varies from 1.41 €/kg to 1.64 €/kg when considering offal on the one hand as waste, or, on the other hand, accounting its market price, while calculating with fixed costs for the co-products biodiesel (0.97 €/L) and MBM (350 €/t), respectively. Overall, heterotrophic cultivable bacterial and fungal colonies, and microbial biomass carbon were significantly decreased in litter-amended soil by the application of nanoparticles after 90 and 180 days of incubation. Time dependent effect of nanoparticles was significant for microbial biomass in litter-amended soil where nanoparticles decreased this variable from 27% after 90 days to 49% after 180 days. IONPs decreased CO2 emission by 28 and 30% from litter-amended soil after 90 and 180 days, respectively. These observations indicated that time-dependent effect was not significant on grass-litter carbon mineralization efficiency. In this study, we address this issue for the small ruminant parasite Haemonchus contortus in the Punjab, Pakistan. This region provides an opportunity to compare H. contortus populations that have been subjected to a prolonged period of frequent benzimidazole drug treatments on government farms with parasite populations that have been exposed to little or no drug treatment in neighbouring pastoral herds.
