Political spectacularization is a broad global phenomenon challenging contemporary digital politi... more Political spectacularization is a broad global phenomenon challenging contemporary digital political communication under new features that define interactive digital narratives. In this sense, the use of politainment formulas in digital contexts to reconnect the electorate with political leaders and institutions through a more direct and interactive communication deserves further understanding of its implications on the devaluation of political information and the loss of democratic quality. This thematic issue sheds some light on how the spectacularization of political communication, which increasingly takes place in online contexts, affects and is affected by these processes, where entertainment is crucial to engage citizens. In this editorial, we provide a short overview of how research on politainment has started to shift its attention away from traditional media toward the wide array of lenses of politainment among digital platforms. La desregulación económica de las últimas tres décadas ha afectado globalmente a las prácticas pe... more La desregulación económica de las últimas tres décadas ha afectado globalmente a las prácticas periodísticas de la televisión. La consecuencia más visible de ese cambio tiene que ver con la aparición del género del infoentretenimiento, una hibridación de las funciones temática y pragmática del periodismo en aras de la explotación extensiva e intensiva de las audiencias. A través de un Análisis de Contenido asistido por un software de datos cualitativos, se analizan los posibles efectos del infoentretenimiento a través de una muestra estratégica de El Intermedio; un espacio que representa de modo adecuado las prácticas periodísticas y los contenidos asociados al género. Respecto a lo temático, los resultados señalan que el formato replica la agenda y el framing de la prensa de referencia española. En relación a la función pragmática, el espacio aporta una pléyade de mecanismos retóricos que sugieren un engagement más acusado con los públicos.

The research analyzes the content that 32 male and female candidates published on their Instagram... more The research analyzes the content that 32 male and female candidates published on their Instagram accounts during the month prior to the date of the 2019 presidential elections in Argentina. The content analysis method was used, in order to evaluate two variables: type of published information and communicated leadership style. The main results indicate that they privileged the strictly political content more than politainment, and the projection of hard leadership skills more than soft ones. For their part, Instagram users express their preference for posts in which soft leadership skills are communicated, especially when it comes to the posts of the female candidates.

The mediatisation of politics is based on the logic of spectacle. Politainment defines the phenom... more The mediatisation of politics is based on the logic of spectacle. Politainment defines the phenomenon in which political information is trivialised by the hybrid narratives in which it is included and its anecdotal tone, with the aim of reaching an audience that seeks entertainment rather than information. This phenomenon has reached the digital sphere; the media, political parties, and prosumers are interested in using the new communicative context to expand their audience or become producers of new narrative formulas that act as a loudspeaker for online infotainment policies or discourses. This research examines the engagement obtained by politainment producers on Twitter, a network where debates about television content are concentrated. The article examines the tweets issued by Spanish television programmes that carry out politainment. Politainment is a phenomenon that deals with the political communication of entertainment regardi... more Politainment is a phenomenon that deals with the political communication of entertainment regarding its production, diffusion and intake in its different formats. It entails consequences regarding the dynamics of communication such as political informative decline, along with the loss of democratic quality giving prominence to a post-truth communication environment and promoting the celebritization of politicians. The academic basis upholds that, in the politainment environment, social networks play an important role acting as instruments that help promote information exchange, both horizontally and vertically, from an active, connected, empowered social audience which evidences participation, contribution, production and collaboration. In the midst of entertainment society, that started off at the end of the twentieth century, pop ... more In the midst of entertainment society, that started off at the end of the twentieth century, pop politics developed as a new communication formula used by the political leaders to share their image and their messages to the citi- zens by means of features from the entertainment environment or celebritiza- tion. In a similar way, the traditional mass media act, including formats of politi- cal infoentertainment to share the political information to the citizens in a frivolous, superficial or satiric format, aiming to increase their audience. This dominant situation of politainment has been transferred to the Internet envi- ronment, where the trend multiplies its effect due to the power of social net- works.
