The purpose of this qualitative case study is to explore the English language lecturers in one Malaysian public university describe their self-efficacy beliefs in ODL practice. Purposive sampling method was used to recruit prospective participants. Semi-structured interviews were used as the primary data collection method. The data gathered were then analysed using thematic data analysis. The results indicate that despite having the compulsory implementation of ODL within a short notice, the participants disclosed that their sense of self-efficacy beliefs varied depending on context-specific nature based on several domains including self-assurance, technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK), teaching preparation, intrinsic motivation and administration support. The present study also reveals that participants utilised emotion-driven self-efficacy beliefs to overcome ODL challenges and eventually developed social-emotional rewards for staying positive in ODL practices. It was also found that self-efficacy beliefs contributed to students’ positive performance, and this has become a factor in heightening participants’ self-efficacy beliefs. The results have provided enlightenment on participants’ self-efficacy beliefs in ODL practices and offer recommendations for improvement in tertiary educational practices to bring positive impacts on teaching and learning.

The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to shed light and describe the lived experiences of ten English teachers who persist in rural schools in Sabah, Malaysia. Data gleaned from in-depth interviews and observations and were thematically analyzed. The research questions captured teachers' perceptions of the existing teaching and learning environment, sources of stress and coping strategies through interviews and observations. The findings depicted that rural schools do not benefit from a conducive environment to support English teaching and learning due to the limited English environment, shortage of teaching resources and poor physical environment. The findings also revealed that dealing with low English proficiency (LEP) students was their main stressor in teaching English in rural schools, followed by students' disruptive behaviours, excessive workload and lack of support. To cope with the stress, teachers first evaluate and assess possible solutions through a stress appraisal process. The present study identified that the personal, social, professional and institutional coping strategies were used by teachers to cope with stress faced. The findings have implications for the teaching of English in rural schools and could offer recommendations for changes in educational practices in which the authorities, school administrators and teachers could collaborate in improving English education in rural schools and thus students' learning, achievement, and school reputation.

The purpose of this case study is to identify the source of stress and its consequences among English language lecturers of a Malaysian public university teaching in the ODL environment during the Movement Control Order period as well as their coping strategies to overcome occupational stress. The lived experiences of the participants were explored through in-depth semi-structured interviews. The data gleaned were thematically analysed for gaining insights into the phenomenon under study. Results indicate that even though the participants are familiar with the integration of technology in blended learning model, the stress is sourced from inadequate preparation time and teaching materials for the full implementation of ODL, and the struggle of maintaining work-life balance due to managing other commitments in work-from-home mode. The present study identified personal, social and professional coping strategies were utilised by participants to cope with the stress and solve arisen issues during ODL sessions. The results have given insights into the participants’ resilience in ODL practices and could offer recommendations to in-service professional development programmes, training and stress management courses for lecturers. The limitations and recommendations for future studies were also discussed.

Open Distance Learning (ODL) has been enforced in almost all educational institutions to ensure ongoing teaching and learning. This study explored persuasive strategies of Professional Communication students in presenting their projects via an online platform. The participants' prerecorded presentations were transcribed and analysed thematically based on Rhetorical Appeals proposed by Aristotle to unveil the prominent persuasive strategies applied in achieving the course outcomes. The results of this study revealed Logos or argument-focused strategy as the prominent persuasive skill used by the students in attracting their project prospects. In addition to the data analysis, ethos, or speaker-focused strategy, was applied moderately, while pathos, or the audience-focused strategy, was the least used to persuade the audience. Indeed, the results of this study provide extensive knowledge of the subject and the research context, specifically in the field of Professional Communication course.

Although the Central Bank of Malaysia (CBM) regulates and supervises financial institutions in order to combat illegal investment scheme through Financial Services Act 2013 (FSA 2013) and Islamic Financial Services Act 2013 (IFSA 2013), they do not protect the consumers should they choose to deal with the illegal financial service providers. The large financial losses have a negative impact fiscally on investors’ socioeconomic. Hence, this study is proposed to analyse Malaysian illegal internet investment scammers’ language properties to provide cyber defense for the public. Using Zhang and Wildermuth’s (2009) content analysis process, this study intends to examine the linguistic strategies used by scammers in their websites to deceive their targets. This study will focus on several websites identified by CBM as the primary data source. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with personnel from relevant government agencies. For triangulation purposes, individuals who have experienced investing and willing to share their experiences and data will be interviewed. All data will be coded and categorised, and emergent themes will be presented to answer research questions. With great hope, this study’s results will help provide comprehensive public education about these scams’ linguistics strategies as a strong defense against them. The results may also help the authorities develop better crime prevention methods and contribute to the criminal justice system in presenting more significant linguistic evidence in the court of law.
