Research paper thumbnail of Experiencing circular design: Stories of agri-food waste transformed into new materials for architecture

Furthermore, the attention of public and private actors as well as policies and rules are now focused on accelerating the ongoing transition from linear to circular economy. In line with this multi-sectoral shift, the paper intends to illustrate the results of the research activities carried out at the Politecnico di Torino in cooperation with Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of the Piedmont region (Italy). In particular, the article illustrates a double experience developed with two different paths: the CIBUS’ research project (Circular economy in the Building Sector from agri-food waste) and the innovative master’s degree course Design and development the transition to the circular economy. Both experiences apply circular econom...

Schools of architecture play a crucial role because the transition towards a circular economy implies the necessary development of new professional figures with wide-ranging skills that may pave the way for new directions in R&D. This article describes three different learning experiences developed at Politecnico di Torino, which have in common the prospect of supply chains in transition. In particular, it discusses the following: the transition of waste from the agrifood chain to the design sector through the experimentation of panels for furniture; the integration of local supply chains for cork, sheep wool, and soil through the design of insulation blocks and panels; and the ‘as-is’ transition of an element originally used...

Research paper thumbnail of Adaptive Refurbishment for Aging in Place: Design Scenarios of Case Studies in Turin, Italy

However, often the houses do not have the requirements to easily adapt to the needs that change with aging and possible downsizing of the family unit. For the elderly, maintaining their own home can become unsustainable due to problems of costs, oversizing, physical and perceptual accessibility, and safety. The contribution, taking as a case study the residential building heritage of Turin (Italy), illustrates and critically compares scenarios of adaptive recovery of homes to make them suitable for the needs of the elderly, intending to promote “aging in place” and housing adaptive refurbishment as a sustainable strategy.

Research paper thumbnail of School buildings as learning tools: guidelines for the eco-efficient renovation project

The need to renovate existing school buildings – characterised by physical, functional and normat... more The need to renovate existing school buildings – characterised by physical, functional and normative problems – offers an opportunity to improve the technological and environmental performance of assets with a strong symbolic value. Insofar as they are public buildings and, as such, reflect the community to which they belong, schools can be considered not only material but also educational and social assets, ideal places for spreading a culture based on the principles of sustainability. The main aim of the research is to identify criteria, addressing public administrations, designers and final users, able to guide technological-environmental renovation of existing school buildings, with particular reference to two major aspects: - building eco- efficiency - management eco-efficiency related to the need of reduction of the environmental load, rational use of resources and users' comfort and health. The results of the research include: a simplified auto-evaluation method based on the UNI approach to assessing building ecocompatibility, adapted to existing school buildings, that can be adopted directly by the public administrations for quality control of the environmental performance of their buildings; guidelines that indicate solutions and strategies for the renovation of school buildings and for aware management of these, addressing not only local authorities but also the various users of the school.

Research paper thumbnail of An integrated design approach to the development of a vegetal-based thermal plaster for the energy retrofit of buildings

The adopted methodology, here specifically implemented for vegetal-based hydraulic lime thermal plasters for energy retrofitting purposes, has pointed out the importance of a multi-criteria optimization when studying the development of materials to be used in a retrofitting process, where true sustainability implies that many different aspects need to be tackled contemporarily. The most effective plaster blends have been identified and tested, through an iterative process, which has involved moving from the material/component level to a real building application and taking into account environmental, technological, energy and comfort related issues.

The book describes the results of an assessment of the environmental quality and sustainability of the projects included in the programme for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympic Games. The method is based on the requirements and performance of the project (UNI 11277/2008). Its environmental requirements are defined with reference to: the use of climatic resources; the environmental quality of the external spaces; reduction of resources consumption; reduction of the environmental load; the quality of the internal spaces. It is divided into three parts: description of the evaluation system, its methods and indicators; illustration of the case study assessed, the ecocompatibility of the project and the results of the evaluation; comparison with the requirements, parameters and weightings considered in other national and international evaluation systems
