Has your ancient stamp been regummed with synthetic glue? A FT-NIR and FT-Raman study
Talanta, 2016
The potential of FT-NIR and FT-Raman spectroscopies to characterise the gum applied on the backsi... more The potential of FT-NIR and FT-Raman spectroscopies to characterise the gum applied on the backside of ancient stamps was investigated for the first time. This represents a very critical issue for the collectors' market, since gum conditions heavily influence stamp quotations, and fraudulent application of synthetic gum onto damaged stamp backsides to increase their desirability is a well-documented practice. Spectral data were processed by exploratory pattern recognition tools. In particular, application of principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that both of the spectroscopic techniques provide information useful to characterise stamp gum. Examination of PCA loadings and their chemical interpretation confirmed the robustness of the outcomes. Fusion of FT-NIR and FT-Raman spectral data was performed, following both a low-level and a mid-level procedure. The results were critically compared with those obtained separately for the two spectroscopic techniques.

Among the amides prepared from the latter, the diphenylacetic acid amide showed antiarrhythmic and local-anesthetic activity.

These compounds gave N,N-disubstituted 3-aminomethyl-exo-5,6-trimethylenenorbornan-2-ones by LiAlH4 or catalytic reduction. Starting from the same alpha-hydroxymethyleneketone, pyrazole derivatives (V) and (VI) have been also synthesized; the former showed anticonvulsant activity in mice.

In our research the possibility of the application of the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) technique to the cheese volatile fraction evaluation was investigated. An Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA) FT-IR prototype, developed to detect some volatile molecules released from bottle grade PET, was used. The preliminary step of the work was devoted to the set up of the best analytical conditions and instrumental parameters for cheese analysis. Thirty nine samples of PDO Bitto cheeses were analysed by both EGA FT-IR and Solid Phase Microextraction/Gaschromatography/Mass Spectrometry (SPME/GC/MS) technique. Satisfactory correlations were observed between the FT-IR spectra and the most abundant compounds detected by SPME/GC/MS. Even though some aspects of the analytical conditions need to be improved, the results obtained are promising for a possible application of EGA FT-IR in the evaluation of volatile fraction of foods.

Many clustering techniques can provide erroneous information about the existence of clusters. The single linkage technique is suggested to identify natural, well separated, clusters. The existing statistical tests on the significance of clusters are not satisfactory. A new statistical test, based on the distribution of the distances between the objects and their first nearest neighbor, is presented. The performances of the test are compared with those of the Sneath test and of the variance-ratio test on some artificial and real data sets.

Besides 44 minced meat samples of pure bovine and 44 of pure turkey, 154 mixtures of minced beef adulterated with turkey meat in the range 5–50% (w/w) were prepared and analyzed. The spectral data, standardized by different pre-treatments, were processed, separately or fused, using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression. Moreover, a variable selection method was performed before classification and regression analysis. Among the three spectroscopic techniques, comparing the PLS models in terms of errors in prediction (RMSEP), the best results were obtained with NIR and MIR spectroscopy, whereas the UV–vis results were less satisfactory. Finally, combining information from UV–vis, NIR and MIR spectroscopy improved the overall results.
