This article reported a training conducted to increase competency mastery of teachers of Bahasa I... more This article reported a training conducted to increase competency mastery of teachers of Bahasa Indonesia and English in vocational schools in Palembang in developing teaching materials based on the local culture of South Sumatra. Applying the development research method, the following stages were conducted: identifying goals and objectives, conducting instructional analysis, determining entry behavior and student characteristics, writing performance objectives, developing assessments of teaching materials that refer to criteria, and developing texts of teaching materials. The training was conducted in the form of lectures, questions and answers, discussions, and demonstrations. The product of this training was teaching materials with the readings that were based on the local culture of South Sumatra.

This is a qualitative study in a case study design. The participants were two English teachers of secondary school in Palembang. The data were collected through questionnaire, interview, observation, and documentation. The data of this study were analyzed qualitatively. The data obtained from the observations and interviews were analyzed through thematic analysis by identifying, classifying, arranging, and clarifying them. Data from documentation were read thoroughly and matched with criteria set. Data from questionnaire were classified based on the frequency of characters taught during classroom teaching. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap kebutuhan siswa sekolah menengah atas untuk mengembangk... more Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap kebutuhan siswa sekolah menengah atas untuk mengembangkan bahan bacaan bahasa Inggris berbasis perubahan iklim dan dikaji dari perspektif siswa, guru bahasa Inggris, dan pemangku kepentingan. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran. Partisipan dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas sebelas, guru bahasa Inggris, dan pemangku kepentingan sekolah lainnya. Data diperoleh dengan menggunakan kuesioner dan wawancara semi terstruktur. Temuan: Hasil analisis kebutuhan menunjukkan bahwa: 1) siswa masih kesulitan memahami teks. 2) jenis teks yang dibutuhkan adalah teks laporan, 3) siswa masih belum mengetahui tentang perubahan iklim, 4) alasan utama memasukkan perubahan iklim dalam membaca adalah untuk mendorong motivasi bahasa Inggris. Kesimpulan: Karena kebutuhan, perlu untuk mengembangkan bahan bacaan teks laporan tambahan yang menggabungkan perubahan iklim agar sesuai dengan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa. Kata kunci: bahan bacaan bahasa Inggris, SMA, perubahan iklim, analisis kebutuhan.

Professional Development of Novice English Teacher in Junior High School. Objectives: This study ... more Professional Development of Novice English Teacher in Junior High School. Objectives: This study aimed at finding out novice English teacher's understanding about professional development in a junior high school in Palembang, novice teacher's professional development, its challenges, how challenges are met, and supports provided by school and government. Methods: In this qualitative case study, the data were collected through questionnaires, interview, and documentation and were analyzed by using Likert Scale, transcription, codification, and thematic analysis. The participants were an English novice teacher, a senior teacher, and vice principle of curriculum affair. Findings: Regardless of her good understanding, the novice teacher lacked of professional development. She encountered instructional, social status and identity, classroom management and workload challenges, which were met by joining subject teachers' forum, while advices and consent to join teachers' forum were given as school support. Conclusion: Novice teacher should understand and apply professional development in her career.

The purpose of this study was to find out the validity, practicality, and potential effect of the... more The purpose of this study was to find out the validity, practicality, and potential effect of the developed interactive multimedia for teaching descriptive texts based on Palembang local culture. With Research and Development (R&D) study, this research procedure was adapted from ADDIE model consisted of five phases, i.e. analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. In evaluation phase, formative evaluation which consisted of self-evaluation, expert review, one to one evaluation, small group evaluation, and field test. Formative evaluation was conducted to see the validity, practicality, and potential effect of the product. Validity was evaluated in expert review phase for its content, construct, and media. Based on experts review the result showed that the average score of all aspects of the developed product was 3.58 which can be categorized as very highly valid. The purposes of this research were to find out (a) to what extent the English textbooks used by t... more The purposes of this research were to find out (a) to what extent the English textbooks used by the public senior high schools in Banyuasin matched the requirements of Curriculum 2013, (b) which textbooks met the objectives of TEFL based on Curriculum 2013, (c) what were the teachers’ perceptions of the English textbooks used by the public senior high schools in Banyuasin, (d) what were general qualities found out in the textbooks. Descriptive analytics and quantitative method were used in this research The samples were 22 teachers of English who taught at public senior high schools in Banyuasin. The data were based on (1) documentation, in terms of three English textbooks, (2) three questionnaires were used, a checklist for raters, teacher's evaluation, and teacher's ideas about general qualities. In specific, this study was intended to see whether or not the developed interactive multimedia had validity, practicality, and potential effect. The subject of the study was the tenth-graders of Multimedia Study Program of the school. This development research applied Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) design. The formative evaluation was done through one to one evaluation, small group evaluation, and field test. The findings showed that the validity mean score of the developed product was 3.71, categorized as very high validity level. The practicality mean score in one-to-one evaluation was 3.69, in small group evaluation was 3.65, and in field test was 81.37, categorized as very high practicality level. The beliefs of EMI more or less would give a contribution to the teaching and learning process. This study aimed to investigate teachers’ beliefs towards EMI, to find out how the beliefs reflect in their classroom practices, and the challenges that teachers encounter in teaching content subjects through EMI. The qualitative in case study design was applied and questionnaires, observation, and interviews were used to collect the data. The observations and interviews data were analyzed through thematic analysis and the questionnaire data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical analysis. The findings of this study showed that most content subject teachers at SIS Palembang had a strong belief towards EMI.
