Rocky planets with temperate conditions provide the best chance for discovering habitable worlds ... more Rocky planets with temperate conditions provide the best chance for discovering habitable worlds and life outside the Solar system. In the last decades, new instrumental facilities and large observational campaigns have been driven by the quest for habitable worlds. Climate models aimed at studying the habitability of rocky planets are essential tools to pay off these technological and observational endeavours. In this context, we present eos-estm, a fast and flexible model aimed at exploring the impact on habitability of multiple climate factors, including those unconstrained by observations. eos-estm is built on estm, a seasonal-latitudinal energy balance model featuring an advanced treatment of the meridional and vertical transport. The novel features of eos-estm include: (1) parametrizations for simulating the climate impact of oceans, land, ice, and clouds as a function of temperature and stellar zenith distance and (2) a procedure (eos) for calculating the radiative transfer i...

The study is based on high-resolution Nal (FWHM ≃ 3-7 km s −1 ) and Call (FWHM ≃ 5-7 km s −1 ) spectra of early-type LMC supergiants, collected as part of a coordinated investigation of selected regions in the Magellanic Clouds. From the analysis of the optical absorptions by means of multiple-component line fitting techniques we have obtained the most complete data base of interstellar Nal and Call column densities and radial velocities for the LMC. The gas structure is more complex than expected on the basis of 21-cm emission surveys of the LMC, which identified just two main components in our field: in several lines of sight the absorption profiles show at least five absorption components spanning the range of radial velocities +260 km s −1 ≤ V hel ≤ +300 km s −1

The instrument is installed in the Combined Coude Laboratory and linked to the 4 Units of Telescope through optical Coude Trains, being the first spectrograph able to collect the light from the 4 UTs simultaneously. One of the key science goals of the instrument is to test the stability of nature's fundamental couplings with unprecedented resolution and stability. ESPRESSO will allow to eliminate current known systematics and test the claim by Webb et al 2012 of a spatial dipole in the variation of the fine-structure constant. These improved results (either null or variation detections) will put strong constraints on a range of cosmological and particle physics parameters.

The algorithm is able to distinguish between these events and real features by comparing the standard deviation and the kurtosis of a synthetic PSF, whose width is given by the user, and the corresponding values in a running window, whose size is chosen by the user, in the actual frame. The anomalous pixels are therefore filtered with a neighbourhood average.

Stellar populations and the complex structure of the two galaxies show the effects of the strong interaction among the components and with the Milky Way. This paper discusses the large-scale distribution of the interstellar gas, showing how high-resolution interstellar observations toward bright MCs sources can probe the depth and the three-dimensional structure of the system. The SMC is a definitively disrupted system, composed of at least four separate bodies at distances increasing with the velocities. The LMC appears also with a layer structure, even if the evidence is not so clear cut as for the SMC, and there is also a substantial rotational structure. The bridge appears to connect the front of the LMC with the rear of the SMC, while the intermediate-velocity clouds are probably a mixture of clouds belonging to the Galactic halo with gas associated with the LMC.

In the work described in this paper, GSC sources are cross-correlated with entries in the PPM catalog, and used as an input to the control software of the Galileo Telescope (TNG).
