Present study was aimed to investigate the comparative fitness profile analysis following chronic melatonin supplementation in young, untrained sedentary male subjects in contrast to placebo. Methods: A single blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted with the melatonin group (MG) (n=14) and placebo group (PG) (n=14). Melatonin at a dose of 3mg/day, 30-60 mins before bed time was administered nocturnally to the MG for 4 weeks. All the measurements were taken weekly in the morning. Fitness profile broadly consisted of a battery of standardized physical and physiological tests (aerobic, anaerobic and motor fitness parameters). Statistical analyses comprised of repeated measures ANOVA with the level of significance set at p<0.05. Results: In comparison to PG, a significant treatment effect was noted for vertical jump test (VJT) score and handgrip endurance, both higher in MG. Further, a significant time effect was observed with greater handgrip strengths (right and left hand), handgrip endurance, flexibility, VJT score, balance and lower blood pressure

Obesity, a global health burden and one of the most deleterious diseases have substantially increased prevalence attributable to changing lifestyle of modern times. Persuasive evidence indicates obesity as an independent prognostic factor for developing malignancy in the form of breast cancer particularly in post-menopausal women. Objective. This review aims to focus in comprehensive manner on the biochemical, hormonal and immunological pathways governing the obesity linked breast cancer so that potential treatments may be improvised consequently to provide a cure to this menace, threatening the lives of many. Methods. Literature review of published materials that provide examination of recent or current literature on problem of obesity. Results. Increased body fatness, mainly visceral adiposity may account for predisposing an obese individual to the risk of encountering cancer although the mechanisms for such cancers may vary depending upon the organ affected. Metabolic...

Background: Assessment of lung function is an indispensable tool for determination of the health ... more Background: Assessment of lung function is an indispensable tool for determination of the health status in case of the athletes. Present study focused on evaluating the lung function parameters for the state-level male basketball players and male volleyball players of West Bengal, India apart from comparing the data with their agematched healthy, sedentary male counterparts. Methods: State-level young male basketball (n = 40) and volleyball (n = 40) players being involved in athletic training for a minimum of 5 years were employed in the study from several sports clubs in Kolkata. Sedentary group subjects (n = 30) who were non-smokers and belonging to similar socioeconomic background served as the control group for the study. Standard procedures were followed for measurement of the physical parameters and pulmonary functions. Results: Physical parameters like body height, body weight were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in case of the sedentary male control subjects when compared against both basketball and volleyball players. Vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV 1), end expiratory flow (FEF 75%-85%) and peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) were significantly (p < 0.05) higher for both the basketball and volleyball players in contrast to their age-matched, healthy sedentary counterparts. Body height and body weight were found to be correlated significantly with the lung function parameters. For prediction of the pulmonary function parameters in the studied population, both simple as well as multiple linear regression equations were computed. Conclusion: Data from the study revealed that participation in court sports like Basketball and Volleyball lead to improvement of the pulmonary functions status of the athletes possibly due to their training pattern and game demands. Prediction of the pulmonary function in the studied population may be done by employing the regression equations.

Boxer groups had significantly higher (p<0.05) values of absolute and relative VO2max, flexibility, VJT scores, body density, % lean body mass (LBM) and significantly lower (p<0.05) values of pre-exercise heart rate, diastolic blood pressure, high intensity effort (HIE), agility, fat mass and %fat compared to their sedentary counterparts. The light weight boxers (LWB) showed significant differences in body weight, BMI, BSA and LBM when compared against the sedentary control group. Significant intra-group variation for LWB and middle weight Boxers (MWB) were seen in case of body weight, BMI, BSA, BD, FM, % fat, % LBM, absolute VO2max and VJT scores. Correlation statistic revealed significant relationshi...

It aids in optimizing the performance of a skill at the rate of success, precision and reducing the energy consumption desirable for that performance [2]. Agility, flexibility and Vertical Jump Test (VJT) score are some of the parameters that are important contributors to the measurement of motor fitness in the studied population of both athletes and non-athletes [3-9]. An individual's level of performance in a wide range of activities is determined through both general and specific motor skills. Success in sports for an athlete requires involvement of both motor fitness as well as reaction time [10]. This present review article has been aimed to focus on the studies that have been conducted in the recent past on motor fitness in children, in relation with various compounding factors, such as physical fitness, maturity, body composition and certain social factors that are vital to attain desired levels of motor fitness.

Background and Aim: Data of fitness profile parameters in Indian basketball and volleyball player... more Background and Aim: Data of fitness profile parameters in Indian basketball and volleyball players are scanty. Present study aimed to evaluate the fitness profile parameters of the volleyball and basketball players and compare the data between the groups and with their overseas and sedentary counterparts. Methods: Volleyball (n=40) and basketball (n=40) players belonging to the age group of 18-30 years were recruited from Kolkata, India in addition to their sedentary counterparts (n=30) who were recruited from the same locality where the players reside. Standard procedures were adopted to evaluate the fitness profile parameters. Statistical analyses comprised of ANOVA followed by Bonferroni's post-hoc analysis with the level of significance set at p<0.05. Results: Basketball players had significantly higher anaerobic power and BMI, % body fat and total body fat than the volleyball players, whereas, agility, body density and % LBM were significantly higher in volleyball players. Conclusion: Inter-group difference among the experimental group individuals may be attributed to the variation in the physical and physiological demands pertaining to their specific sport as well as difference in their training modules. Greater fitness in the studied players in comparison to sedentary control individuals was attributed due to their regular involvement in training.
