BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer has the most rapidly increasing incidence of all major cancers in India... more BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer has the most rapidly increasing incidence of all major cancers in India. The overall prevalence of thyroid malignancy is approximately 1 - 5 % of all cancers in women and less than 2 % in men. Thyroid nodules are a common clinical finding and have a reported prevalence of 4 – 7 % in the general population. The vast majority of these nodules are non-neoplastic or benign and the risk of malignancy varies from 5 to 10 %. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an efficient and reliable means for the evaluation of thyroid nodules. A key challenge for clinicians is to choose which thyroid nodule is to be investigated further and treated. Early detection and treatment of malignant thyroid nodules is associated with excellent outcomes. The aim of our study is to compare and correlate between fine needle aspiration cytology and histopathology of resected specimen and to determine the diagnostic accuracy of TBSRTC (The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopat...

But the situation in developing countries like India is quite different. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This study was conducted amongst the patients attending the Otolaryngology department of a teaching hospital in Kolkata to find the incidence of various types and sites of head and neck cancer, to assess time delay from the date of onset of symptom to the final disease confirmation in relation to patients’ demographic profile, to assess time delay in histopathological diagnosis after reaching a tertiary care setup and also to correlate tobacco consumption and alcohol intake as risk factors for head and neck cancer and to note the reasons for late presentation, as described by the patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS The ...

METHODS: Study was conducted in two different places of Eastern India from 2006 to 2015. The patients with complaints of vertigo attending Otorhinolaryngologists at the first instance or by GP referral were studied. General Physicians also underwent a survey through a questionnaire. RESULTS: From the last 9 years of data, we find a definite increment in the number of vertigo patients at our OPD along with an increase in consciousness amongst the general physicians, though majority of doctors still don't think Vertigo to be predominantly an ENT disease.

Dexmedetomidine; a selective α-2 agonist; has recently been used intrathecally in different doses to prolong spinal anaesthesia. We evaluated the effect of adding two different doses of dexmedetomidine to hyperbaric bupivacaine for spinal anaesthesia. The primary endpoints were the onset and duration of sensory, motor block and duration of analgesia. Eighty patients, (20-60yrs) posted for elective lower limb orthopedic surgery of traumatic origin under spinal anaesthesia were divided into 2 equal groups (Group D5&D10) in a randomized, double-blind fashion. In this prospective parallel group study, group D5(n=40) 3ml 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine+5μg dexmedetomidine in 0.5 ml of normal saline and group D10 (n=40) 3ml 0.5% bupivacaine+10μg dexmedetomidine in 0.5 ml of normal saline were administered intrathecally. Sensory and motor block...
