Military training and periodical assessment are essential in preparing a well-built soldier physi... more Military training and periodical assessment are essential in preparing a well-built soldier physically and mentally for the Malaysian Army Forces. One of them is the water survival training test. The test consists of a series of aquatic tasks conducted in a remote area. As a matter of fact, it requires a water-pool facility which is durable and portable. Therefore, this research aims to design and prototype a modular portable swimming pool for floating exercises and assessment for military personnel. The study is conducted in partnership with the Royal Army Engineers Regiment, with the objectives being to design, simulate, prototype, and build the modular portable swimming pool for military uses. The study output was tested, evaluated, and appraised on the swimming pool workability on site. The methodology is divided into 4 phases; (i) Content Studies and Design Profiling, (ii) Digital Prototyping, Evaluation and Testing, (iii) Physical Prototyping-Materials and Method; and (iv) Application and Measurement. The study seeks to maximise the training of military personnel and reduce the transportation time and resource costs of building a permanent pool by placing it with a modular portable swimming pool, which is more cost-efficient and user-friendly. The findings of Phase 1 prototyping required improvement on design structure where it indicated disadvantages in sustaining water volume ability at targeted level due to structural integrity. Upon improvement of Phase 2 prototyping using metal with bracing frame the pool are able to sustain the desired water volume at 5200 l 3. Moreover, this study, also responds to the approaches of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9, 16 and 17 towards harmonizing and interconnecting the three core elements of sustainability, economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection for human well-being.

A pilot study has been employed to prove the viability of the questionnaire survey and make improvements prior to the actual survey examining the framework of Sustainable Facilities Management (SFM) initiatives for Malaysia’s hotel industry. A survey was conducted among 5-star hotels registered under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Malaysia. A total of 34 respondents were successfully recruited from Klang Valley’s hotel staff. The reliability and validity analyses of this pilot study were conducted using PLS-SEM: SMART-PLS Version 3.3.2. The study’s findings revealed that the surveyed SFM initiatives in the hotel organisations were statistically significant. In addition, the findings indicated that the SFM initiatives positively contributed towards sustainable development goals (SDG); particularly SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 9, SDG 12, and SDG 13. The study’s main implications further confirmed that the instrument used in the pilot study fulfilled the acceptable requirements of the reliability and validity range for the main data collection purpose of the intended study.

One of the internal factors influencing the participation of housing developers in the development of affordable housing is its organizational structure. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between organizational structure and private housing developers' participation in development of affordable housing. Data for the study are collected from a sample of 352 licensed housing developers that are based in Peninsular Malaysia. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) is adopted for data analysis. The results approved the hypothesized immediate effects of organizational structure (formalization and centralization) and private housing developers' participation on the development of affordable housing. The results carry an enormous effect; therefore, its empirical research is developed into the context of affordable housing development.

While management of this form of residential development is governed by a range of Acts, mismanagement remains widespread. Previous studies have identified a significant relationship between residential satisfaction and housing management performance in multi-family affordable housing. In this research a multiple stage random sampling process was used to investigate the experiences of high-rise residential communities in Selangor. It found that satisfaction with the residential environment, including the dwelling, neighbour and neighbourhood, improves housing management. Policymakers and strata corporations need to understand the importance of this relationship to the establishment and maintenance of sustainable high-rise living environments.

However, despite the rising social issues, research on the social dimension of sustainability is limited and needs more analysis, especially the efforts taken by the local authorities. Thus, this triggers the discovery of local authorities’ social sustainability initiatives (SSI) practices, mainly city council. This study aims to provide a benchmark on Social Sustainability Initiatives (SSI) currently practised by Malaysian City Councils. This study’s objectives are to identify the city councils’ SSI practices from the annual report; the SSI disclosed in annual report by determining the most prominent SSI practices among local authorities. Thus, this research adopted a qualitative method using the content analysis technique. The annual reports for the years 2018, 2019 and 2022 ...

Design/methodology/approach Eight elements and 38 performance criteria were identified from the literature, and a questionnaire survey that involved environmental cleaning experts was carried out. Content validity index was used to validate the content of the environmental cleaning elements and performance criteria in this study. Findings The result indicates that the performance criteria of “Finishes, furnishings” and “Equipment Maintenance Log” were not relevant to be applied in current fighting against Covid-19 infection in health care. However, the remaining 36 performance criteria were proved as relevant and acceptable. Practical implications The findings of this study can provide a significant contribution to the built environment industry. As a result, Selangor development has encroached the highland areas and it was constantly hit with inundated landslide disasters. Landslides are now viewed not only as natural occurrences or as the result of design flaws, but as a greater risk to society that must be managed accordingly. Since then, the issue of neighbourhood engagement in local authorities has increased. There are four issues that affect neighbourhood engagement in local authorities, 1) People in urban areas spend more time in their workplaces, 2) Some of planning and development tools, planning standards, and regulations are not clear, 3) Limited community capacity in decision making, and 4) Government behaviour towards residents in highland areas. Improving neighbourhood engagement in local authorities significantly enhances disaster risk reduction of highland developments in Selangor. Local autho...

For this research context, 'commitment' refers to the extent of information provided by universities in their website which demonstrated initiatives towards achieving the sustainability goal. The objective of this study was to identify sustainability initiatives highlighted within university websites using Australia as a case study. Thirty-nine (39) websites were reviewed and web content analysis was performed to publicly available data including any relevant accessible PDF documents attached to the universities website. Specific websites information was reviewed to detect sustainability themes in the broad university management and operations (i.e., in general policies, corporate mission statements, research activities, positions available and strategies). The commitment of Australian universities was significant and well established with a set of twenty (20) related themes were identified. The findings have some limitations because the established themes only emerged from the websites' content without human validation which possibly weakens the correlations between website information and organisations actual practice. This possibility is recognised and for this reason, further assessment may be advantageous to provide verification of the findings. Therefore, further studies using other techniques are suggested such as interviews or observations for validation of data and reinforce the entire conclusions. An interesting aspect of this study is the validity of reviewing organisational websites for gauging actual practice and a number of researchers supporting this approached as indicated in methodology section of this paper.

Schools nowadays are looking seriously at the cleaning aspect as they realize the availability of health and environmentally friendly facilities that encourage academic performance and staff welfare. These concerns are due to the conventional cleaning practices and products used to keep the school clean. The cleaning contractors are responsible to understand that chemicals with high levels of volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions and other carcinogens plus dust from poorly filtered vacuums can have a negative impact on the health of students, staff and janitors. Thus, it is a good time for the building managers to make a move to green cleaning practice in school, as a rising number of green cleaning products that are much more effective are available.
