Video telephone technology was used as a tool to bring social and health care education to personnel of municipality funded traditional organisations at Hailuoto island. Additionally we made trials to implement video telephone as a normal day tool to a relatively new private concept of health care, Hospital at Home. The projects were well aimed to study acceptance of technology and to include personnel in video telephone implementation and planning in order to increase use and enhance usability of information and communication technology.

Unfortunately, many users have experienced difficulty and frustration using these systems. This paper presents findings from a series of studies that investigate the ability of older people to use telephone voice menus. The initial study examined if older adults encounter difficulty using real world telephone menu systems and to gather data on menu usability. Six real world telephone menu systems were examined. The sample included thirty-two adults aged 18-80 years. Participants used the menus to perform a sample set of tasks. The data indicated that older adults had more difficulty using the menus and that older adults found the system less usable than younger adults. The second set of experiments investigated how design features impact on user performance and the potential benefit of environmental support aids. Subjects from three age groups, younger (18-39), middleaged (40-59), and older (60 and over) performed a set of tasks using simulated voice menu systems. Measures included: task performance, menu navigation, and subjective evaluations. Experiment 1 examined the effect of speech rate. Data from 196 subjects indicated age differences in performance, especially for complex problems. However, there was no effect of speech rate. Experiment 2 examined two types of support aids: a screen phone and a graphical aid. The older subjects benefited more from the graphical aid while the younger subjects performed better with the screen phone. These findings have implications for the design guidelines for these types of systems.

In this study, we shall introduce a third perspective to innovation as action, namely, innovation as a human way of thinking. We claim that innovations are always made by thinking people, and therefore we should also look innovations in concepts of scientific research to human thought processes. Since societal and organizational paradigms concern innovations as relatively large wholes, we term the research on these paradigms as macroinnovation research. Here, we study the relations of microinnovations research to major paradigms of innovation research and in this way define its role within the field. We shall define the common ground points between microinnovation research and such established paradigms as organizational innovation research, innovation processes, systems and especially ecosystems of innovations research, flow of information, diffusion of innovations and finally the research on innovation policies.

Efforts should be made at different educational levels to strengthen young employees' OSH skills and knowledge. OBJECTIVE: To analyze OSH perceptions and attitudes among university students and to examine OSH professionals' views on OSH teaching. METHODS: This explorative study employs an iterative multimethod approach, including a paired comparison questionnaire for university students (N = 104) and OSH professionals (N = 40), an OSH questionnaire for university students (N = 130) and a Delphi survey for OSH professionals (N = 26). 2 RESULTS: OSH perceptions and attitudes were found to vary widely among the students and some expressed somewhat stereotypical views about OSH. The results confirm the need to improve OSH education. To that end, the study reports concrete practical ideas from OSH professionals. CONCLUSIONS: The findings confirm the need to augment both the quality and quantity of OSH teaching at university level. Ideas are presented for future OSH teaching, along with recommendations for future studies.

The results showed that high social support at work (p < 0.001) and in one's private life (p < 0.001) were associated with higher total work engagement, higher vigor, higher dedication, and higher absorption. These findings were adjusted for gender, marital status, education and occupational status. The results were essentially unchanged when they were additionally adjusted for job strain and effort-reward imbalance. To conclude, our findings indicate that the experience of overall social support may play a role in the experience of work engagement.

The aim of this systematic literature review was to give an overview of future OSH challenges in industrialized countries. A search within the Scopus database returned 31 peer-reviewed journal articles published since 2014 on new and emerging OSH risks and challenges in the future. A review of articles identified future overall OSH challenges, OSH challenges caused by climate change, and OSH challenges related to sustainable development and responsibility. In addition, branch-specific challenges in industries and health care were determined. Individual employees can experience a wide range of OSH challenges from heat stress to poison absorption, musculoskeletal disorders, increased psychosocial load, ergonomic issues, and unexpected accidents and injuries. OSH management is discussed and future studies proposed.

Research paper thumbnail of Rational and participative task allocation between the nursing staff and the logistics support service provider in healthcare

The work system model is used as a theoretical framework, with resilience and cost as complementary concepts. This qualitative case study used action research and participatory design to develop the work system with the interplay of two parallel personnel groups in the healthcare environment. First, the case of an ongoing relationship between the target organization's nursing staff and in‐house logistics and material supply services was studied. The development process resulted in a variety of practical ideas to improve the cooperation between the personnel groups. In the second case, a prospective relationship between the nursing staff and an external logistics service provider was examined. This research's conceptual results identify the main characteristics of rational support services as comprehensive, resilient, reliable, and easily accessible.
